I am trying to upgrade my computer. Help

I am trying to upgrade my computer.

I found 2 ways to do it on a budget.

A computer for flightsimulator only.

My current system is 5800x3d + 3080.

  1. RTX 3080 → RTX 4070Ti.

  2. 5800x3d → 7800x3d ( I will also replace the motherboard and ram).

Which of the 2 ways is better?

Which 3080, the 10 or 12 GB version? They both can run the sim well, but the 12 GB version performs a bit better and may change some opinions.

For me, it wouldn’t matter. I’d upgrade the CPU first. I have the 5800x3d but still have minor hiccups when running FSLTL. I know the 4070ti can help with that as well with frame generation, but I’m not a fan of the technology and artifacts it causes (not to mention my monitor is 60Hz max anyway).

The only thing that may sway me would be budget. Upgrading the GPU would be the easiest, just slot in the card and go. Maybe upgrade the PSU if needed as well. With the CPU, you’ll also need a new mobo and memory, which can drastically increase the price over the cost of the GPU. What you plan to do with the replaced parts would play a factor as well. If you plan to sell them, that will help recoup a lot of your costs, which could negate those budget concerns.

Thank you for your response.

My 3080 is 10GB.

Is it possible to replace the graphics card or the CPU?

I will sell the parts after the replacement.

Of course. The GPU isn’t likely to need anything unless you are close on your power limits with the PSU. The issue with the CPU is you’d be going from AM4 to the redesigned AM5 platform. That is why you’ll need a new motherboard. It’s also ONLY compatible with DDR5 memory, while earlier platforms were DDR4 memory and why you’ll need that as well.

Pcpartpicker.com is a great resource. You can enter your current parts, then play around with your upgrade ideas to check for part compatibility. It’ll also show you prices at several retailers (though not all) to give you an idea of what your budget needs to be.

It’s simple you upgrade whichever is the current limiting factor. It’s normally the CPU for MSFS 2020.

Number one because of frame generation. The 5800X3D is still a very good CPU for MSFS.

That depends:

If you’re playing at 1080p or 1440p, the 3080 should be powerful enough, I’d definitely go for the CPU/MOBO/RAM. The AM5 socket is brand new so you’ll be able to upgrade just the CPU in the future too.

If you’re playing at 4K there’s an argument for either, however the 4070Ti doesn’t really have enough VRAM for 4K, so it wouldn’t actually be much of an upgrade over the 3080.

Personally, if I wanted to upgrade something right now, I’d get the CPU/MOBO/RAM.

Otherwise, I wouldn’t get either this year. I’d wait for the RTX50xx to come out next year and upgrade then (to a card with 16GB+ VRAM). Or I’d wait for next year’s X3D CPU to be released and upgrade then

If you are running at 1440p with the 5800x3D then it looks balanced (other screen resolutions will impact the results). I ran your info (assuming you run at 1440p) through the web site below and took a screen shot of the results. Note - this calculator only factors in graphic card intensive tasks/games and not MSFS specifically and should only be one point of consideration in your decision.

I think the bottom line is that your not going to see any significant increase in performance unless you upgrade both processor and video card.
