So, one thing that strikes me is that judging from the information that only 42% of the RAM is used, the 32 GB of RAM make no sense and I could just contnue to use my 16 GB of RAM.
It also seems that the GPU is the Bottleneck as it is at 100%
What settings can I maybe use to get some moe FPS with MSFS 2020.
Is there anything in those Radeon Drivers of the GPU I could twek ? Or is whatever is in there overwritten anyhow by the seetings I make inside of MSFS 2020 ?
I can totally play like this, but as I am not a professional PC builder or IT specialist, I am sure that somebody with more knowledge can shed some more light on this.
Obviously I can get more FPS with only playing in 1080p, but I play on a 65" 4K TV, so it doesn’t lok as good if I lower the Resolution. 1440p is what I play at and what I am aiming for.
maybe somebody has some good advice
The 32GB of RAM is certainly useful. Yesterday I flew over Paris (Photogrammetry), and it was using 28GB.
You’ve already found that your GPU is the current bottleneck. Nothing really you can do about that, apart from lowering settings. It’s up to you what amount of visual fidelity you’re willing to sacrifice for better framerate.
If you end up upgrading the GPU, you’ll find that your next bottleneck will be the CPU, and quickly you’ll end up in an endless upgrade cycle chasing frames.
My advise is to drop settings until you get the performance you need.
You also didn’t post what framerates you were getting, but my experience is anything above 30 is good.
Agree 100%
With prices for GPUs where they are at the moment, it doesn’t make sense to grab a new card.
Thank you
The framerate is in the upper left corner of the screenshot. I get between 20 and 25 FPS usually. Sometimes of course lower. Sadly the new update had my Framarate drop a bit lower than before on average. So I decided to post here and ask.
I will fly to some other places to see what RAM is used. That’s a good idea !
I seldom fly over big cities though. I once flew over Tokyo and FPS were dropping like crazy, so after that I stayed away from big cities. Don’t really care for them anyhow.
I will also play around more with the Graphic Detail settings to see what I can lower even more.
Yes you are right. Buying a GPU is not possible at the moment for reasonable prices, I will not do so.
I am commenting as a hardware owner with identical CPU/GPU specifications - but it’s reversed for me - Operating System is on a slower SSD, with the sim on an M.2 NVME, and I only have 16GB RAM.
I am operating a mostly Global Low Graphics Settings, with traffic turned way down and offline AI where possible. The only thing on Medium with material impact is Clouds. I also use Live Weather often.
I am getting at an average 45-50 fps in Bing Maps areas, at least 35 fps in most Photogrammetry areas, using a variety of the single engine GA planes.
You have your settings way too high if you want to get to at least an average 30 fps. This configuration doesn’t really support Ultra at all - for that you need a beefier GPU and faster CPU. It’s just the nature of the beast. I’ve seen users claim Medium and High and they have a good experience. I’ve tried that and the frame rates just drop into slide shows, so your experience may vary. I would say our config Ryzen 5//RX580 is probably more a Low-Medium mix at the most if you want a framerate at or above 30.

thank you !
Interesting to meet somebody with the same GPU/CPU !
I have AI off, but I never looked into those traffic stuff. The cars on the streets and so on. I will test what FPS boost it gives to turn them off.
I am aiming at 30 FPS somehow. I can totally play this kind of game with 30 FPS. The only thing on Utra however was Clouds and Terrain Vektor Data, I just put Clouds to High and it gave me 3 FPS boost, which is a good thing.
I also turned Terrain Vekor Data down to High, I will test what that does.
Some things I cannot sacrifice, like the resolution and the TAA. Game just looks not so good on 1080p and without TAA on my large TV.
I have been playing Arma 3 for some years, the game has similar issues. I think both games do not use the CPU properly, Arma 3 famously only uses one core of the CPU, not sure how MSFS does this.
I landed today and looked at some buildings with various settings. It seems to me only Low makes a difference in the visuals.

My system is very similar to yours, just a little lower (R5 1600 @ 3.8, RX480 8GB, 16GB @3200). I have good performance with this settings, but on 1080p. And have anti-lag turned off on Radeon settings. I have much better performance using windowed mode and vsync off, letting windows DWM handle the tearing. Try it.
If you want, you can tell me an exact location, weather, and time, so we can compare performance. Good luck.
PS. I have multiplayer and AI turned off, don’t care about them, so don’t know if that affects performance.

very inspiring, thank you.
my test is from Kaliningrad Airport (I think UMAA) with the Savage Cup, then turn West towards the Sea. I fly with Live Weather exclusively.
Windowed Mode lets my FPS drop a lot, don’t know why. I can only use Fullscreen.
Nevertheless, with yours and the other infos in this thread I have now managed to get 29 FPS in this area which is much better than before. And it still looks good enough.
with only 1080p, I get 39 FPS in the same location.
P.S.: What I do get a lot is stuttering with framedrops. Haven’t paid that much attention to it since the patch because I was focused on the FPS in general, but it’s quite abvious. I need to investigate this further. Could just be the Kaliningrad region, I haven’t flown anywhere else since the new installation after the update.
Did another thing.
I had XMP on in the BIOS to let the RAM run at it’s designated Max Speed. Since the RAM however is barely used, I have now switched XMP off so the RAM is running at only ~2200 Mhz instead of 3200 Mhz.
Figured that since RAM is no decisive factor, I can let it relax a little.
It makes no influence on the FPS ( I will just leave it off now). FPS in 1080p and 1440p are the same. RAM usage even seems one or two percent lower, but that could just be different weather or slightly different location. RAM usage has never gone above 42% (of the 32 GB RAM).
However, from a first subjective impression it seems to me stutters have gotten less. Maybe the XMP was driving the RAM too hard or something like that. But it could all just be coincidental afer 5 minutes of flying.
I will make some more tests this weekend with my old 16 GB 3000 Mhz RAM to compare the FPS and performance, but for today I am done testing. Need to take a walk (in the real world), have nice lunch, a nice afternoon drink to get into the weekend and do some fun flying without worrying about FPS.
