Well with all the negativity on VR equipment…I think I’ll wait until the headsets get fixed with all the error messages and all that stuff.
No error messages mate, just poor performance or mixed results. Stick with 2D until it is taken care off.
I’m with you on waiting.
I decided to wait on VR until high resolution was more common. Can’t do IFR with fuzzy gauges. Then when the HP Reverb G2 was announced, I thought now is the time to move to VR.
I decided to wait to read the feedback from the MSFS VR release and glad that I did. Seems there is more optimization needed by Asobo before I will take the VR plunge.
Me either- I need 4k. I can’t fly with low res, even with the immersion of VR- I couldn’t do it in XP, I can’t do it here.
Works for me in GA planes with steam gauges with a fairly meaty machine + 2080ti + Reverb G2. Low flying and aerobatics are amazing in the Savage Carbon and Grravel. Had some proper motion sickness throwing them about over cliffs, looking up while going over in a loop etc.
Sure, if you need perfect everything whilst on instruments at 30k+ feet, I understand you need a little more. We are on release number 1 of VR in MSFS, it’ll get better as will availability of better hardware. Give it a year or two and I think VR will be just amazing for all.
Hey OP, Just posted on your other thread about G2.
Having played MSFS in 4K for 2 months then switched to VR in December to blurry at times, glitchy mostly, sometimes good smooth flights.
Honestly there is No going back to 2D. Period. Full stop. There is no other choice for me. If you have not tried VR get a Quest 2 its 300 bucks try it out.
Lets Live and Fly for to today, sure things can always get better tomorrow. If you are not flying in VR you are missing out on this amazing gift of experience we call MSFS. My humble option. Cheers!
I am feeling much the same. The G1s are on sale here direct from HP for about half the price of a G2 and I was tempted.
However with an older 6 core i5 8400 /32Gb with NVME and what is probably these days deemed an “upper mid range” GPU, an 8GB RTX 3070, my system is fine in 2D, but everything I am reading is suggesting plugging in a G1/G2 in MSFS will pretty much kill it.
I agree with you on this one. It is extremely difficult to go back to 2D after VR flying. It really makes you feel like you are flying but it is not always as clear with the instruments.
My landings are spot on in VR, in 2D I look like a youtube video “hard landing compilations”.
If you wait now you’ll be waiting forever, VR is very good in MSF but like most VR Sims it’s not without its issues and quirks.
People generally post more about issues and negativity on forums than they do about the good VR brings, so if you’re basing your thoughts on that then maybe you should think again.
Same with me. I cant fly on a flat 2D screen anymore!
2D flight simming is like visiting places by Google Street View. Nobody gets the feeling of “being there” doing that. On the other hand, every VR flight that I did so far, burned into my memories like the most memorable real flights that I ever enjoyed. Looking to the side for the glimpse of a second and seeing a barn in a forest glade on mountain ridge is a view, that I will probably not forget for the rest of my live. I can say, was there! Sitting in my living room in front of a PC! Memories of my real world cockpit career of 15 flight hours are not more present than the VR flights, that I did.
And I say that with my Acer WMR headset + a GTX 1060 equipped notebook delivering probably one of the “worst” technical VR experience at all, if you just look at raw numbers like framerates. The experience only starts suffering with either fast planes or over dense cities. But even flying with a slow prop over Hong Kongs Victoria harbour by night is simply a breathtaking experience. Its by a long shot the single most stunning thing I ever experienced on a PC…
I’m totally loving it too - see my thread here with settings for quest 2.
It is all about expectations though… I knew it would require tweaking, but after a couple of days of working things out I’m now loving it.
I totally agree with the sentiment of never going back to 2D… sometimes I will to learn a new plane and have some other windows open for reference, but VR has changed my simming experience by a whole new universe. Even my slightly stuttery VR flights are more enjoyable than my 2D ultra smooth 1080p flights. I also dont have the space or money to have a huge monitor and loads of periferals, my Quest 2 has been the best £300 I’ve spent in years. (oh and the nearly £2k PC… too…)
I surprised myself I got my humble 8600K 6 cores / GTX 1080 / 64GB Ram / HP Reverb G1 - working OK with VR after a HORRIBLE start when I bought MSFS in december when VR was added, but a month of tweaking does wonders (after almost giving up). I took off the earbuds, which crash the USB port, and my latest tweaks of many are to run at 60Hz and the Windows portal Off. Finally no more - horrible - crashes with a MSFS that loads sloooooooooooow, and still looks acceptable (Reverb razor sharp cockpit).
It’s the OP’s choice but like others have said, simply cannot fly in pancake mode anymore, bought a Quest 2 and it’s absolutely fantastic, the immersion is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before
Im pretty happy with a G2 and FS2020. No error messages, just performance not quite where I’d hoped. Itll get better. The good news at least for me, its not like previous sims where any kind of rain/clouds would bring the sim to its knees. I don’t have a performance change between clear and clouds/precip.
The main thing with VR from what I’ve seen is it seems older cards perform better than lets say a 3090 which is nuts. I guess something with drivers being optimized/ect. My 2080ti is max vram in fs2020 in VR, so one would think a 3090 would rip through this but from what some others have posted it doesn’t seem to be the case.
Thanks for your detailed Quest 2 setting! I have been trying them out for a bit now.
Do it anyway. There’s plenty of games to keep you occupied until FS2020 can run good.
I fly in pancake made for IFR, jets, etc. but VR is ok (a bit laggy) and really cool for VFR sightseeing…stick and rudder only…Cubs, Icon, etc.
That said, Google earth VR, even with tons of 3D buildings in frame is really cool, and smooth as glass. Star Wars squadrons at ultra is also awesome and smooth.
MSFS still pegs one core, while the others loaf along, as did FSX since it’s based on the same core code…just with visuals improvement. It may not be technically single threaded, but what it spins off to multiple threads isn’t much.
Maybe they’ll work on that eventually, but not until after the Xbox versions launch.
For a different reason, I’m holding off because I don’t understand how to fly with it on. I’m constantly looking at the keyboard, mouse, or just a beer. I’m looking at getting the logitech radios also. Would you have to know brail to use? VR sounds like a pain.
MSFS is actually one of the best VR experience I had. The feeling and immersion are simply fantastic…
I think only Half-Life:Alyx amazed me that much.
I understand the terrible computing power requirements, but this game is just completely another world in VR.
