I usually get great photogrammetry with MSFS – So, why not in the new UK/Ireland update?

I have no photogrammetry in London or Bristol after the mandatory, quickly installed Update and the 110-minute UK-Ireland download/install. My simulator now runs with 1.13.16.0 at top left and displays the great Isle of Dogs shot, leading me to believe the install was successful.

I did not change settings after installing the UK update; I had fine photogrammetry when flying in NYC, Detroit, Chicago, Miami, Fort Worth (but not Dallas) Los Angeles and San Francisco, and it still works well. Photogrammetry also works as it should in Quebec, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

Over London, without changing any settings, I see a correct-looking Shard and the Tower of London looks much like it did when I visited the place but I have no Gherkin, Walkie-Talkie or Canada Place. I have seen those in screenshots of the new London PG but they are not happening in my simulation.

So, the fine photogrammetry I usually get in MSFS is absent in the new UK/Ireland update for me.

I would imagine others must be experiencing this issue but when I searched the forum for UK/Ireland-related photogrammetry problems, before posting, I found only one post and it pertained to MSFS 1.12.13,0 and Live Weather. Any suggestion to resolve this would be appreciated.

Are you saying that after the 50 gig or so update, you also then went and downloaded/installed the UK/Ireland update via the “Content Manager”? (Which is completely seperate and optional from 50 gig 1.13.16.0 update).

Those buildings are not part of photogrammetry - they are handcrafted objects. Do you happen to have the London Landmarks addon from Orbx installed? If so, then it might be conflicting - it is a known issue.

Double-check your photogrammetry setting in “graphics”. Mine, for some reason, was turned-off.

During a recent flight, my internet connection had a hiccup and was disconnected for few minutes. I suspect the app automatically turned the Bing imagery off after notifying me about the connection drop.

Thanks BazzaLB. I followed my usual update time procedure: Unticked all add-ons in Addon Linker; Started MSFS and let the update install; Turned MSFS off; Went to Store and got the UK/Ireland World Update. That took almost two hours. I don’t think my routine differed from the other updates. I have not yet re-enabled any addons with Linker. I did not open Content Manager at any time. Should I?

on any update , you shpoud do 4 steps:
1 go to ms store, let it update
2 start sim, let it update
3 go to content manager, check if all is up to date
4 go to market place for the free download.

yes, i agree not the most user friendly

oops yes and wisely you did already, make communityfolder empty beforehand.

I do not yet have any Orbx scenery in MSFS. The screenshot illustrates what I see over London after installing the UK update. I don’t think there’s any photogrammetry because I don’t see the greyish tinge that permeates other PG areas that operate correctly in my simulation. Thanks FltsimFlyboy.

I made sure everything in Data was turned on, including Bing and Photogrammetry. When I saw i could not get PG in London, Bristol and Dublin to appear, I deleted the rolling cache, saved, re-started MSFS and turned rolling cache back on: all to no avail. I double-checked everything in Data several times. Thank you, StopHalfling310.

I mis some POI’s which come with the update in this picture.

I just found your post, wcoesel, and I think you got me on the right track. I have not often gone to My Profile so I have not regularly checked inside Content Manager. I have just now done so and, although I see that ‘Core Content Mandatory Packages by Asobo’ are up to date, I don’t see anything pertaining to the United Kingdom and/or Ireland. (I see 112 items in my Content Manager with zero ‘not installed’, zero ‘updates available’ and zero ‘downloading’ items.)

I will now see about installing UK/Ireland from Market Place and get back here with my result ASAP. Thank you very much.

I think you’re right SkinErmine4112. I’m off to the Market Place this minute !

In that case, i would go the annoying but simple way… clean up and install new… yeah i know. :blue_heart:

Nearly correct :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: except the part where you didn’t mention that POI’s for UK and Ireland may have not downloaded in the initial World Update 3 from the marketplace. I checked in Content Manager and I had downloads left for Barra and UK and Ireland POI’s - of course I don’t doubt for some this might not be necessary?

I now have photogrammetry over London and I appreciate all the help, thank you all very much.

I forgot to go to Market Place for the UK/Ireland update, it’s as simple as that; my bad. I now have 122 items in Content Manager and three 0s under that. (Nothing left to install.)

My takeaway: A defined procedure must be followed each time I am faced with a new mandatory update and/or optional content. I prepared a short reminder to be used every time I start MSFS and find I am unable to fly the sim for that reason. I started with wcoesel’s list and fleshed it out to make sure I will not skip a single step. Please let me know if you find anything incorrect or missing in it:

Procedure when starting MSFS and finding it will not open because of a mandatory update:

Turn off MSFS and disable all add-ons

Go to MS Store and look for the new MSFS update. Get it started and wait for completion

Start MSFS and wait for the usual Welcome Screen

Go to Content Manager (in My Profile) check presence of new update and for zero available updates

Go to Market Place, locate the new update, click ‘Buy and Install’ and wait for completion

Start MSFS and test fly the new update

Re-enable add-ons as they become needed

The download/install steps one must follow to update is not streamlined; hopefully, some day, I’ll remember its intricacies and will not have to use a reminder.

I actually have the opposite problem- my photogammetry is awful in most places in the US, unless I’m flying low and slow. For a few days last week it seemed fine however, then the update came out and it seems worse. I tried everything- lowering settings, using cache…but it’s the same no matter what.

Your assumption is correct. There are many of us who are having the same photogrammetry problems in the UK as you.

And everyone wonders why they have a rolling cache. They even recommend turning it off. Then they all complain that the servers are slow. Rolling cache is good for everyone. They just need to tweak the stuttering a little.

I acknowledge I have not had much time to fly in the new UK scenery but, when I sampled it after finally getting my update situation straightened out, I took off from Runway 27 at EGLC and immediately recognized the iconic Canada Place building’s pointed top from afar. This was my cue that PG was working at last. However! As I approached the Isle of Dogs cluster, I noticed some buildings were not as ‘photogrammetric-looking’ as I expected. Flying along at a 1000 feet, I reached the cluster opposite the Shard and, again, something seemed amiss. The Walkie-Talkie is there, so is the Gherkin, but it almost feels ‘half photogrammetry’ and half ‘not-photogrammetry,’ for me anyway. I’m not saying this is happening for other simmers but, for me, photogrammetry in the UK/Ireland World Update seems diminished when I compare it with, for example, Montreal, which is the Metropolitan Area where I live, or, to give a famous example, NYC. Bing Maps for Montreal appear spot on and very detailed for the downtown and immediate surrounding area but, in Brossard, a scant four miles across the St.Lawrence River, there’s no photogrammetry where my house is located. But that’s another story.

As I fly over Montreal, I see full-on photogrammetry; no buildings seem to be ‘Not PG’ and everything is fairly smooth, much better than FSX used to be, albeit with a new computer, mind you.

I don’t understand why some areas appear to me ‘full-on PG’, with a pronounced grey-predominant hue overall, while other areas, said to be PG, appear more yellowish, and seem to contain some generic yellow and red brick buildings. As I said, my general impression of photogrammetry in some areas is ‘Half-PG and Half-Not-PG,’ if that is even possible. I’m beginning to think my UK/Ireland update is incomplete but how can I tell? Content Manager does not indicate any anomalies.

Have you checked the Store? The UK update is in there and can be bought for free.

I thought I would find it in the MS Store, just like you. Turns out I had to go to the Market Place to find the UK/Ireland update. Take a look at my earlier post above, I describe the whole procedure I had to go through before I could finally get it. And, you know, this is why I posted in the first place: my inexcusable failure to find photogrammetry while flying over London was entirely due to my forgetting to go to Content Manager !
