I’m in the process of getting myself a 10th gen i7 and the non K version is attractive to me as it’s 100€ cheaper. I know the R7 3700x would be the best buy but I don’t want to spend for faster ram (I have 32@2400). But does it worth it? How’s performing compared to the unlocked used at stock frequencies?
I have a 1080p monitor and a 1080Ti. I don’t care about having the highest fps but just getting rid of the stutters and freezes I’m having now with an i5.
Thanks.
What are you using for storage - HDD or SSD?
I have both and tried both. No differences in stuttering. I’m CPU (100% stuck) bound.
OK, ta.
The only benefit between K and non-K is the ability to overclock the K but the K does have a 300Mhz advantage over non-K stock 5.1 vs 4.8. I doubt very much you would notice a difference to be honest. If you’re happy to run at stock speeds then for sure save yourself the 100 euros.
Edit - I should add the speeds quoted are max turbo, single core. Base clocks are wider difference but again that’s dependant on all 8 cores working together flat out.
Would I need a good heat sink to be able to it run at 4.8? Currently my cooler cannot exceed 120W TDP. The i7 non-K at base 2.9 requires 65W but how much at 4.8?
No, the stock cooler will be fine, but as more cooling is always better then consider a Noctua NH-D15 cooler, they are the mutts nuts.
65w TDP is rating when the processor is working all 8 cores at base speed. This is averaged, remember that when it is max boosted it will only be working 1 core (the others might be at 5 percent or even idle) so the TDP remains very similar. This is true for all (Intel) processors - I think if an 8 core was to run all cores at 100 percent you’d be needing Chernobyl-style cooling (and probably power!) to run it
Understood. So if MSFS afaik needs 4 cores running full I’d better lock the frequency at base 2.9 to benefit from all 8 cores operating, right? 65W TDP is my main constraint.
I’m not a fan of either company but seriously don’t understand why anyone would still buy intel at this point accept for some seriously niche scenarios.
Yep, you got it!
That is pretty harsh
Please don’t start flaming, I was just looking for an advice. Thanks guys.
You don’t necessarily have to. I wouldn’t buy a locked Intel chip, and the R7 3700X is definitely a great CPU.
You could try overclocking your memory, and if that doesn’t work, it seems that setting your infinity fabric manually has most of the benefit of upgrading ram speed (saw that on an LTT video). Try setting it to 1600 as that should be guaranteed to work on any chip pretty much, and see if you can get it to 1800 or 1900, but not all chips can obviously
I have upgraded from 4790k to the 10700k and i overclocked it to 5.0ghz. By this I mean CPU fixed at that clock, no throttle down. I found a remarkable difference! Quite amazed.
I have also high performance RAM at 3600 MHz with XMP - 32gb
bottleneck of my system is now my 1080ti. I’m waiting for the 3080 and then I’m all set for 4K flying.
The 10700k CPU is VERY good, absolute deal.
I was hesitating to get the 10900k, but I believe the difference is quite small in performances and big in pricing.
If you get 10700k I suggest you turn off HyperThreading to have better performances, this helped me a lot!
I’m flying at high-end (with some ultras and mediums) with 60fps at 1080p.
For 4K we need to wait for 3080
Just finished to install my new brand new 10700 and z490 mobo (you never know in the future…), fired up MSFS and the stutters are OVER.
Probably a bit late now since you’ve purchased it but for anyone else looking at this, If you want to save a little bit of money (and there’s stock available) consider purchasing a KF processor.
The K indicates unlocked as mentioned (for Overclocking) but the F indicates No Intel Onboard Graphis. Most of the performance tests on the KF’s are largely the same as the K models, but the prices tend to be a little lower due to the lack of Intel HD Graphics — Purchasing a KF processor requires Discrete (Stand-alone) Graphics (ie, AMD Or Nvidia card) - which you’re going to need anyway for MSFS.
Hope this helps.
You right but in my case the KF was not available shortly, plus my current 120W tdp cooler wouldn’t have been enough. Anyway yes the K/KF model is the best choice.
@crisk73 I was going to buy an i9-10900KF but nowhere had any stock so I got the K (which almost nowhere had stock of either)
At the moment it’s just sitting on a shelf in the box collecting dust until my new case turns up, along with the Fractal Design Celsius S36+ Dynamic (360mm all in one water cooler for the CPU)
Same here. Same result!
I got an i9-10900KF through B&H Photo last month. I got on their automated “notify” list when it came in. The “K” series were being snapped up so fast, I think the KFs were being overlooked so I was able to get one. My MSI MEG “ACE” mobo doesn’t have a power stage for an IGPU anyway, so buying a K series for that motherboard would have been wasted money anyway.
All my local stores were out of 900K’s and KF’s - I ended up having to order from Interstate (along with my Gigabyte Z490 Vision D motherboard, M2 SSD and CPU Cooler)
Problem is now, I probably won’t fully set it up until I get a 3090 to put in it!
