Thank you so much for the thorough response, Begotten! I will research instructions for each edit you shared. I appreciate your time and expertise.
Question. If i disable HPET, will it adversely affect other aspects of my computer’s functioning? Or do I assume the ISLC will make up for the role HPET plays?
Okay, I disabled HPET and downloaded ISLC, putting in the 16000 value, base don YouTube video tutorial. I then hit ‘Start’ and then hit 'Purge List…"
I assume that’s all I need to do?
I did create a restore point just in case.
I can’t remember the last time I opened ISLC, except to post that screenshot.
Task Scheduler runs it at startup with the option checked.
Very helpful. I am at 16000. Should I go to 32000 then?
That’s 1/2 my total RAM.
Now that you mention it, I just set mine to min 6000 / max 24000, since I have a 16GB RAM disk, meaning I have 48GB usable.
Don’t ask me why…
My system has been running very smoothly, and if ISLC plays a part, then 1/8th RAM / 1/2 RAM was what I had it set for. Might as well reset it for my new usable RAM size.
Ahhh…got it. So I have 64GB RAM so I should set mine to 32000 then. Okay, thanks
One last question Re: resize bar. When reading detailed instructions for how to enable resize bar, I am seeing posts that say it may increase fps by 3-4 and in some cases it can decrease fps. Those posts are dated in 2021, however, and perhaps there have been updates to MSFS that now take advantage of resize bar. If it’s just a 3-4 fps difference, I am inclined to leave it as is. Your thoughts?
I’ve had resize bar disabled and enabled, mostly the latter where it is currently set, at various times over the last few years and I can’t say I have noticed any measurable difference in MSFS performance.
That’s all I need to hear. Decision made. Thank you so much!
And I know this question has been asked (but perhaps back in 2020/2021), but for those who have downloaded MSFS 2020 recently, which is better platform: Steam or Microsoft Store? Seems Steam gives more flexibility with add-ons/location.
MS Store version lets you use MSFS on a PC and Xbox with the same purchase, just not at the same time, whereas Steam version doesn’t.
The last I heard, Resizeable Bar was initially disabled by Nvidia for MSFS due to reduced performance. I can’t vouch if that’s still the case, though.
Okay, thanks.
Got it , thanks
"Resizable BAR is an optional PCI Express interface technology. As you move through a world in a game, GPU memory (VRAM) constantly transfers textures, shaders and geometry via many small CPU to GPU transfers.
With the ever-growing size of modern game assets, this results in a lot of transfers. Using Resizable BAR, assets can instead be requested as-needed and sent in full, so the CPU can efficiently access the entire frame buffer. And if multiple requests are made, transfers can occur concurrently, rather than queuing."
I get two things from that:
- CPU has to be able process large chunks of graphics data.
- RBar smooths out the transfer of data between the GPU and CPU. This might result in better or worse FPS, but it most certainly should improve frame latency.
Thank you, BegottenPoet. I suppose I can try it and roll it back if I need to.
I’ve decided to download the sim from the MS Store. My question is, will I need to apply all the previous updates (the big update from July ‘21, the 40th anniversary update that added the FA-18, etc.) or will they be automatically included in my purchase download, kinda like the latest iOS updates have every previous update included.
You’ll get the latest MSFS core sim version but you will need to add the Maverick Pack, Dune Pack and all World Updates from the Marketplace tab for free then download them through Content Manager on the Profile tab. It’ll take a while to download all that, even with a fast internet connection as the servers are often speed limited. Plan on at least 3 hours and possibly up to 8 hours.
