The C172 unfortunately only has one COM channel, so this workaround doesn’t work 
I think I tried both using the number keys on the keyboard and clicking on the button in the ATC window, both with the same effect.
Really annoying because it keeps me from progressing in career mode and I’ve tried this 3 times now.
