ILS / approach lighting system (ALS) lighting on for airports with or during IMC

Hello,
Normally when I am landing at a busy airfield that has an ILS the strobes / approach lighting system (ALS) are on when the conditions are IMC.

It would be a nice add for realism. The sim has the Wx data and could easily determine that the conditions are not VFR or at least MVFR then have the ILS approach lighting system (ALS) system on for the runway most predominately into the wind.

Just an ask

I love the sim and thank you for the time to read my request / message.

I agree. During daylight hours, meteorologic conditions can be bad, and in real life, the runway lights are being switched off.
It seems in FS2024, lights only come on at night.

Airport approach lighting as an important component of precision approach equipment is recommended to be turned on around the clock, or to be able to have an option capable of turning on all lights of the runway all day time
Thank you

This goes hand in hand with the need for pilot-controlled lighting. Runway/taxiway lights are rarely simply always on/off, or on at night only. There are many permutations, including different brightness levels, mixtures between runway lights, VGSI, and approach lights. Sometimes they’re controlled by ATC, sometimes by photocell, sometimes by pilots, sometimes by a combination of any of those, depending on the time of day.

Being able to ask tower to turn them on or change the brightness, or controlling via mic clicks is not just realistic, it’s a crucial part of flight.

Or call “dim”

Completely. I don’t think folks realize how bright high-intensity lights are in good visibility at night. Even medium intensity can be too much. We don’t have the dynamic range to do it justice in the sim.

Going back to the original post, I think a simple conditional check would be enough as a stopgap until we get a more realistic and robust system.

If it’s categorically marginal VFR (3000’ cig and 5SM vis) or below, or between 30 mins prior to sunset to 30 mins after sunrise, the lights should simply be on.

I really wish Asobo/MS would acknowledge this issue and log the feedback into their tracker. I was coming into an approach the other day into Ålesund, Norway. The weather was abysmally, bad. But, since it was daytime, the lights were off in the sim. I simply could not land, without busting minimums because I could not see the darn runway. In real-life I would have been able to see the bright runway lights in those conditions and continued on with the landing.

I almost wonder if this topic would gain more traction in the ‘bug’ section. Sort of like the Sepia night mask topic.

If the developers are looking for specific values, this is what the air traffic controller’s handbook (FAAO 7110.65) uses as a guide:

As a basic fix, the lights should be on with ceilings below 1000’ or when the visibility is 5SM or less. Should be fairly straight-forward to implement.

If the devs ever try their hand at implementing various levels of intensity, then the table I highlighted in the above picture will also give them a guide for that.

Can’t believe this has so few votes-- how do you even find the runway in low IFR?

I completely agree! This bug should be one of the top in the list. It makes IFR flight at daytime nearly impossible.

This is a really great idea. Asobo please make it happen!

Interesting topic. I fly mostly in SF Bay area and the custom Flightbeam SFO rendition does a nice job. I assume it is them but the ALS comes on in fog during daylight and we have a lot of marginal conditions at SFO. This is work checking out since it seems pretty realistic. The runway lights seem to be the MSFS lights and they are too bright
 another topic on this.

Whatever FlightBeam is doing somebody has their thinking cap on.

The 2020 version of this wish currently has 465 votes and is actually in their tracker, and they still haven’t done that one.
