It seems (I’m not sure) that trimming works in this way: as long as you hold the button down, the trim wheel moves. So the amount of trim is how long you hold the button down. This is very difficult to use precisely. Is there a way you can just trim by one click each time you press the button? Then you could click it 5 times to trim by 5 steps.
I’ve tried clicking 5 to 15 times but it seems like the trim barely moves. It’s almost like it doesn’t start moving right away so a simple click does almost nothing.
I’m sure this has been brought up before, so my main interest is in knowing whether there’s actually an existing workaround.
Nothing to change, that’s the way it works if you bind buttons to the trim function.
(Not sure with a mouse-click, I’ve never use the mouse for this).
Do a test: choose let’s say the Cessna 172, start a flight on the runway, apply park brake, go to external view with the HUD on, so it shows you the trim indicator.
Hold your trim up or down to see indicator changing. Stop.
Now press one by one in the other direction as many times than necessary, you’ll see the trim indicator changing (I dont remember how many press for 1 number change, perhaps 15 to 20 but it works). It depends on the plane and the trim effectiveness.
In flight, also depending on trim effectiveness, at low speed 1 press have quite no effect and holding is required.
But when you fly faster, you’ll see that 1 press is effective and that’s how you can trim your plane to keep the same altitude.
More or less easy depending on plane and speed.
If one notch of trim is too much, you can slightly adjust the power, more make you climb, but you need a very precise throttle control.
(And there is a possibilty to fine tune the trim behavior in the flight_model.cfg file, but better try as is before modifying).
Practice will be your best friend.
With GA planes and no A/P, you trim each time you modify power, or you want to change your altitude.
In flight you should have no effort to do on the stick, except for short periods of time like take off or consistent maneuvers.
With bigger aircraft and cattle planes, no headache, A/P will do it for you.
Watch this vid, no elevator move for soaking wheels in water, only a well trimmed plane and I adjust power more or less.
Hi there,
I moved this post out of Wishlist into General Discussion, as it looks more like a question to the community than a feature request. If you do have a feature request, feel free to create another topic in Wishlist stating what you would like to see in the sim.
For what it’s worth, the way I trim is by physically grabbing the trim wheel with my cursor and moving it where I need to go. Given how sensitive trimming is, it’s usually very small motions.
Planes I can feel under my a…
A fuselage, two wings, a stick, two pedals, less instruments as possible and a powerful engine.
IRL, I was a skydiver between 18 an 53 so I was used to fly with the minimum.
That’s soo true (and even applies to a 767).
The A320 was from a pilots POV the biggest disappointment ever.
No feel, totally disconnected. Flying an ILS approach feels more like playing Ace combat!
Other then flap control, trimming works stepless so it’s hard to bind a button to this action.
In my case, I have a trimwheel on the thottle of my thrustmaster T16000M.
Still very sensitive and the position ( Lefthand pink side) is a bit tricky because it’s easy to touch it unintendedly.
After tuning effectiveness in flight_model file trim can be easily used with buttons on GA planes, but for sure I’d rather use my DIY trim made wirh an encoder on a LeoBodnar card.
For your trim lever, you should use a “sticky” grease, I forgot the ref but you can find it by googling “Molykote grease” in forums about Thrusmaster sticks.
Edit :I nearly found it: search for the Molykote equivalent to Nyogel 767A grease (rare and expensive).
That’s also the same sort Logitech use on the trim wheel of the Multi Function device. Makes the trim wheel very pleasant to use in resistance and it could not been moved by inadvertance.
Well, it is not the case that the wheel turns too easy, but it requires caution not to touch it, while using the buttons on the backside of the throttle…
I’ll get used to it over time.
I’m hijacking this thread to ask: is it possible to use the mouse wheel coupled with a mouse button to trim ? I have a gaming mouse with 6 or 7 buttons, so I would like to be able to click a button and move the mouse wheel to do the trimming.
How to do that ?
It’ easy. In your mouse settings, bind the functions TrimUp and TrimDown to a button+MouseWheel.
Like this (It’s in French but a pic is ever better than thousand words)
The way trim works (and has always worked in this game) you press up trim for 1 sec to counter it you press down trim for 1 sec. Doesnt matter if you have bound to keyboard joystick button it works the same way. The reason that you dont see the wheel move when you tap the trim key briefly is thats how precise? the movement is.
With this relying so heavily on the internet, I have noticed that the trim can be slow at times to react to the changes you made to it. Remember dont Chase the trim let the trim come to you. GrassHopper…
