Immediate CTD when pressing F10, then sim cannot restart

Microsoft Store Version

NOT using Developer Mode

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ISSUE:

Whenever I press the F10 button during flight it immediately crashes the game to the desktop. Then I am unable to start Flight Simulator again, something about “Windows cannot access the file specified”.

I’ve gone through this procedure repeatedly, it took me a while to figure out (from MSFS release day to now, pretty much) what was actually happening, but yes, pressing the F10 button crashes the game every time. I am honestly a bit scared to touch the F10 key by mistake. : ) I have made sure F10 is not assigned to anything ingame, but doesn’t help. I’ve looked around other programs running on the PC to see if F10 was a hotkey in some other application causing the crash, but I have not been able to find anything.

I have been able to figure out how to solve the issue so the simulator can start again; go to Windows SETTINGS → APPS find MSFS, repeatedly press TERMINATE, REPAIR and RESET a couple of times, this should enable the option to INSTALL instead of RUN Flight Simulator from the XBOX App. Doing this, the sim will start and you will be asked to select the location to install. Make sure you select the location where the sim was installed previously, the sim will then just start again normally, no reinstall necessary.

HOWEVER, this doesn’t solve the problem, any suggestions or ideas are welcome. I’d really like to be able to use the F10 button normally when flying. Cheers!

I have never heard this one before.
Could this be a keyboard issue?

Does msfs hang or just close to desktop? Seems like it is acting like alt/f4 (close active).

Try using in a preset macro if there is one or set one up to test.
Does it still close if used in a combo?

Search the net for f10 use in other programs you have, specially keyboard apps.

It just closes to the desktop. It might appear like an ALT+F4, except for the fact it is no longer possible to restart the sim when this happens (Windows cannot access the file specified when trying to restart).

Well, since noone else have heard about this I suppose it’s a good sign, probably not an issue with Flight Simulator itself then. I will keep trying to find out what the problem is.

Might be a mod also, anything installed ? Try without any mods.

I think I may have found the problem. MSI Afterburner (graphics card tool) had F10 assigned to ‘screen capture’; I tried yesterday removing the assigned key and the sim no longer crashed when pressing F10.

I’ve had the sim crash previously when trying to take a snap screenshot (SHIFT+WIN+S and then drag select the area you want to screenshot), so it’s my impression the sim is unstable when it comes to certain types of screenshotting.

Anyway, issue resolved! I am happy and can now begin to use the F10 key without fear in the sim haha.
