Not had any CTD”s (yet) but interested that you flew it in multiplayer - did you see the other f35”S as f35”s or other random planes? (Currently when I fly with other f18”s am seeing them as other GA aircraft which is really weird as everyone owns the F18…)
It means they are using a visual mod you dont have like External tanks/weapons. Even just a livery you dont have will do that though. Im hoping SU8 will use the F18 as the generic model for similar aircraft. The GOTY stuff is part of the core game but still too new for that.
Ah Mobias… I must be one of the few people who would rather have a Chippy in MSFS than an F35…
I definitely see where you’re coming from.
Besides the F35 (A,B & C), I get CTD with the AH Grumman F3F. At this moment no other planes give me CTD.
I got most of my CTD’s when in outside vieuw. Some during flight and some on the ground, during taxi / parking.
I agree with you 100% - the plane should have autotrim. But they intentionally took it out during beta because of “bad feedback” from the testers. (I forget where they said that – in the manual, I think.) If the Crawfords can do it well on the F-16, then IFTE should be able to do it well on the F-35, which is a vastly more sophisticated aircraft IRL.
On a bigger level, I do think there’s a bit of disconnect between (non-DCS) flight sim users and military jets. I think a large majority of flight simmers want to do everything themselves, or at least as much as they possibly can; hence the “on rails” or “too simplified” criticisms you often see. And for the most part, I think the current sims give you that ability in spades (depending on the developer, of course). But military combat jets are designed (at least today) to require the MINIMUM amount of dial-fussing and switch-pulling that’s possible, the better to allow the pilot to maintain max focus on situational awareness in combat. That’s where autotrim comes in – the F-16 and F-35 (and some other modern jets) let the pilot quite literally just point the plane where they want it to go and have it go there in a stable and controlled fashion. It’s “simple” to fly because it’s made to be simple. That’s a feature, not a bug.
I’d wager that more than one tester probably said that autotrim made it feel like Ace Combat or something; i.e. an unrealistic video game simulation of “flying”. The problem is… that’s actually how these planes are designed to fly. (Note that trainers, like the Hawk/Goshawk, are a completely different story – those aren’t designed to be easy to fly, they’re designed to be appropriately challenging for the level of training they’re intended for, but forgiving of mistakes. Well… except for the F-104. That plane forgives nothing. NOTHING!)
Great post. Interesting points. I have it on good authority that the F35 and Typhoon IRL are themselves situationally aware enough that the pilot doesn’t even need to activate the under carriage. The plane knows that there’s a runway ahead, it knows it’s slowing down and it knows it’s decreasing in height so it automatically just lowers the undercarriage.
I wound imagine if that sort of feature was put in the sim people wouldn’t be happy.
I do think it’s a shame the F35 doesn’t at least have auto trim in the sim though. It seems crazy it was left out. This is one of the most advanced fighter planes in the world we’re talking about here.
Well fingers crossed I seem to have solved my CTD issues. I removed the NXi addon from my sim and was able to do several consecutive flights with both the B and C models including several carrier landings and takeoffs with both.
Not only not wrong, but practically mandatory…
Where is that, by the way? Looks familiar…
Ah, nice to hear it helped!
Yep, didn’t even bother going through the process of loading the sim and removing NXi, just moved it out of the /Official/OneStore/ folder to a backup folder, and I’ll move it back when I want to fly something that needs the NXi.
Cool. MSFS Addons Linker is also a pretty good app for disabling add-ons when you don’t need them.
Midtown New York
It has stopped CTD for me too
For anyone having CTDs when trying to ‘VFR Pilot View Save’, i.e. when trying to set a custom default view – the solution is as shown here, namely in the Community\indiafoxtecho-f35\SimObjects\Airplanes\IndiaFoxTecho_F35A\cameras.cfg, line 49 must be changed from:
UITitle=""
to
UITitle=“TT:GAME.PANEL_CAMERA_PILOT_VFR”
And same change must be done for the F-35B and C.
Thought it fixed mine but still crashing
Tried 3 flights, all CTD
First was before even taxiing, other 2 from just casual flying for about 5-10 minutes
Wait, it had autotrim and it got removed? Because it’s too easy?

It’s like with simracing, where actual race car drivers playing such games kept pushing for more grip and more forgiving transitions into grip loss, and when game developers reacted to that feedback, players started whining it’s too easy and “unrealistic”.
