Installing to a new SSD - request for definitive guidance

So, as I expected SU5 plus the 20GB of updates in content manager was simply too much for my C 512GB SSD - at some point when it was installing the updates in content manager, it CTD-ed and then caused an error that uninstalled the sim entirely.

I’m now re-installing the sim (MS Store version) onto a second 1TB I installed some time ago (I’ve labeled it as a D drive - this is not a clone drive and does not have its own OS running. C is still the boot).

I used the browse options to select the D drive for both the core game installation and the Official and Community packages. I created my own folder.

My question is this: will I need to change anything in a core-game config file to allow the sim to find the folder containing the Official/Community packages given it will have a different path, or will it have configured that given I created that path as part of the installation process (as opposed to simply moving the files from one drive to the other)?

I’m sure there will be many users facing a similar issue and the past threads (eg: 'Re-Install on SSD) are long and offer pretty confusing advice - a definitive step-by-step guide would be very helpful here.

I just re-installed the entire Steam version from a storage drive to my main C drive. OS and other stuff on it. 1TB NVME SSD. I did for other reasons though. My Steam folder is now split up on 2 drives which I’m going to have to do something about, eventually.

Anyway I didn’t have any problems finding the Official/Community folders. I do use Add-on Linker so I simply re-mapped the path to the CF and no issues.

I am having severe issues with the sim in general due to SU5 and that’s why I did the complete re-install. I put it on another drive in hopes of avoiding any leftover files or other tid-bits but the re-install did nothing to alleviate the myriad of problems I’m having with this update.

It seems as though you are thrilled and love the update or are mired in problems. To further add to it I have a completely empty CF (other than the LED fix for my Bravo which is not working anyway) and still have a load of problems.

I emptied and backed up my CF before installing SU5. It’s just my luck to have to do a complete reinstall of 126GB when the servers are totally overwhelmed. It’s going to take 24hours!

But back to the issue at hand - I guess I’m just a bit anxious that once I do have it installed because the packages (official and community) are now in the nice simple path of D:/MSFS packages (my choice) the game won’t find them. I know I can use simlink for the community folder but wasn’t sure about the official folder.

On the plus side I’m learning a lot of stuff about PCs I never thought I would, like how to install a second SSD and put in more RAM etc etc…

Oh and good idea about backing up on to a storage drive. I have a 2TB external HDD that I’m gonna stick the whole game onto so I don’t have to go through download hell again anytime soon…

So, for the record if you chose a custom location for the Official and Community folders when doing an install onto a second drive the SIM will find these automatically - no need to alter anything.

Interestingly I found that the ‘Watched Volumes’ option in the Dev mode (which used to be a surefire way of getting the path for your community folder) is now no longer showing as a choice.
