Instrument readability / Cockpit too dark / Eye Adaptation

Monitors calibrated for photography here, dark cockpits too.
It is true, they need a bit more clarity to be able to read some instruments well.

Internal lights don’t help much, they still don’t illuminate everything. And the comment on my zendesk ticket was that I’d never needed to use interior lights during the day in real life planes

Thanks,
Scott

Maybe a third party shader program would help? Like those shader utilities for X-plane

Not only the cockpits but the airports are terribly dark at night. Starting up the Airbus at night is tough, can’t see any of the buttons.

A light emitting texture on the pilot’s jacket would help ? :smile_cat:

To improve the light a little bit I sometimes use Alt-L that will lighten up gauges WHEN they support the event, else nothing happens. The dashboard is in the shadow. I use assigned camera views for parts of the dashboard (Cntrl-1, Cntrl-2 etc, then Cntrl-Space to return) when zoomed in, everything is perfectly visible.

Yep, when zoomed in it’s fine because the sim isn’t “squinting” with the light \ shadow problem. Maybe I’ll give this a try. Really wish Asobo would just allow more ambient light.

Thanks
Scott

Oh, I get it now. You are right. I like high dynamic range, but it has annoyed me from the start that the sun visors can not actually be used. I find it easy with my control setup to adjust the camera as needed to see things properly (the game does adjust the brightness in the cockpit, but you have to not be pointing the camera out the brighter window) without issue but I only fly the simple aircraft, on a complex airliner having to “squint” or “shade your face” while looking around to poke at all the controls would def be annoying

Try this. It helped for me:

Open “usercfg.opt” file and edit this line “EyeAdaptation 1” to “EyeAdaptation 0” .
Save the file and start the game. Just search you drives for usercfg.opt if you don’t know where it is.

I’ve heard that suggestion before but someone said it gets overwritten every time you start the sim.

The monitor aint the problerm. Other games and Flight sim 2004 look great. The problem is the sim.

I just checked mine. After several updates and many, many flights, it has NOT been overwritten on mine. Just try it, you have nothing to lose. YMMV

After testing it out, you’re right it doesn’t get overwritten. However I notice no difference whatsoever.

Sorry it did not work for you. It made a difference for me, so much so that I don’t even notice a darkened cockpit when looking default pilot view.

Strange, my cfg-file keeps being overwritten, even if I make 5 entrys. As soon as I start the sim, it reads the cfg-file and changes the entrys I made.

How do you know it is changing your edit, after it has loaded the edited file ?

It will write back to your edited file when MSFS “CLOSES”
but I do not belive it does this write back at any other time.

So, you need to edit the file each time before you run MSFS – ie start MSFS from a Batch file, which does the editing with a search/replace, before calling MSFS to start.

When I edit the file, I save it. Next I start the sim and as soon as it is fully loaded up, I check the cfg-file and it is allready changed : my entrys are deleted during the startup of the sim. That is why I cannot see the visual changes in the sim.

That’s odd. Mine hasn’t overwritten that entry in months. If I make changes to options in the sim, those changes will be written to the usercfg.opt file, but the eye adaptation stays at 0 . I am using the MS Store version, not Steam. Dunno if that makes a difference.

I’m on Store too and my file seems to be rewritten every time I launch the sim. I suspect it uses a online backup to update the usercfg.opt file. But one thing is strange: I tried changing the HDR-entry from 1 to 0, and that one wasn’t changed. It stayed on 0 but gave no visual improvement so I edited it back to 1

I tried that as well, and got the same result.

OMG that completely made a difference. I’ll do more testing later tonight but at a quick glance it appears to have completely fixed the issue. Thank you SO much @blueline308 , I really appreciate it! This has been driving me nuts since I started in the alpha!
