27” IPS 1440P
Or
34” VA 1440P Ultrawide
Is it worth sacrificing a smaller screen size for an IPS display?
I’m terrible at deciding so need some opinions please. Thanks

I have the Alienware AW3418DW 3440x1440 IPS and set at 120 refresh rate. I love this monitor and the wide screen is the reason I would never go 4K. This model had been updated since but if you can find it new on sale, you can’t go wrong.
Personally I can’t stand IPS glow, and VA panel have far superior blacks.
I would say a good VA panel is far better for Flight Sim. Night flights are far more enjoyable.
Why not Both??
Some also reverting back from 4k to WQHD (1440p), because of better performance.
VA is good - and as far as i know there are only four manufacturers in the world which producing these panels. So basically the quality will be the same for each and every monitor. Sure this doesnt account for the rest of the elctronic components.
I returned my IPS panel (LG model) as my eyes were starting to hurt after a while of sitting in front of it. I switched to a Samsung VA panel and did not have any problems since then to be honest.
defiantly an IPS panel, but go for a 27’ plus with at least 2k resolution and a refresh rate of above 100HZ
Is there a big FPS drop by using an Ultrawide? I really want an Ultrawide but don’t really want to take a big performance hit. There seems to be a big hype around ultrawides for FS2020, is it really worth the upgrade?
Do you notice a difference in smoothness if you have 30fps for example and you use a 60hz monitor or a 120hz monitor?
Doesn’t your fps need to be 120 to really get maximum smoothness out of your 120hz monitor? Anyone else who can correct me here? I am also planning on buying a new monitor
I thought the same and it is true so some extend. I have used quite a few monitors in the last 6 months experiencing to see what I find best. When flying and you only get 30fps then yes you won’t see any difference between a 60hz and a 120hz monitor. Where you notice it is when you move the camera around the cockpit for example then a 120hz monitor is a lot smoother than 60hz. Everything is clearer and quicker when moving the camera. Also if you have head tracking then the experience will be smoother with a higher refresh rate monitor.
Aha okay so when flying forward and don’t moving the camera, you will not see any difference in 60hz compared to 120hz? But when moving the camera you will experience it smoother in 120hz compared to 60hz? So this means your will still get some smoothness improvements with 120hz even if your framerate is only 30fps for example? Have I understood it right?
Since I have pre ordered the Xbox version of the sim, I want to buy a 27 inch monitor 1440p at 120hz with vrr (variable refresh rate). Do anyone know if AMD freesync is the same as VRR?
Considering an AOC 4k IPS for 350€ i don’t get why people want to downgrade to 1440p, cant’you select 1440p on the 4k?
I went 27" 1440P VA and I must say it is really good. The contrasts are great and the colors are very vibrant and everything looks sharp at that pixel-perfect size. Compared to an IPS, there isn’t a very noticeable difference interestingly enough. But that might because of the decent monitor I chose. You’ll save some FPS with a 27" rather than going ultrawide, I prefer it because of that. So it’s up to you if you’re willing to sacrifice some frames for wide viewing.
The reason is to gain more FPS for a smoother experience. Also you can’t really compare monitors by just looking at the resolution. The refresh rate is just as important. The 4K monitor you are referring to is only 60hz. A 144hz 4K monitor is a LOT more expensive than a 144hz 1440P one.
So could you advise a good 1440p monitor to play FS2020 but also versatile for office tasks? Around 300€?
The Gigabyte M27Q is a good 1440P monitor for flight sim. It’s a perfect all rounder at around £300 plus has the benefit of being 170hz.
Take a look at the LG 38WN95C-W. It’s great for work and play, if you can justify the cost.
I need 34 maximum …
Whatever it is, I recommend getting an ultrawide one. You will never go back to a 16:9 monitor, no matter how good or high end is. Once you get accustomed to 21:9 or wider, to go back to 16:9 is like going from NVMe to HDD. 16:9 is very limited, especially for a simulator like MSFS. And I fly Il-2 and ROF and the extra FOV is more than welcomed in combat.
So a 29’/32 wide monitor in 2K should be enough, right?
