Is it possible to edit the "default" controller settings for a particular controller?

Greetings!

I have a Saitek/Logitech X52 HOTAS controller, which I like.

The “default” default setup for this controller in MSFS 2020 appears to have been inherited from some previous definition for the various buttons and axes, perhaps from an earlier version of MSFS?  The existence of some “default” configuration is not in question, but what I would like to be able to do is to edit the “default”, default configuration to something more suitable to the way I use the controller, so that when I change aircraft, the controller settings are already 99% correct based on my use-case.

<tongue-in-cheek>
For example, button “X” in the default configuration (as shipped in MSFS) might be “launch photon torpedoes”, whereas I might want to have it set (as a generalized default) to “raise flaps” and a particular axis might be set to change the zoom level, whereas I might want to use that axes to set propeller pitch.
</tongue-in-cheek>

In “other” flight simulators, the “default” configuration, (which is an arbitrary collection of settings by definition), can be re-set to a set of sane defaults based on what a particular user may desire.  Specific, non-default, aircraft-based configurations can be created to change the one or two settings that may need to differ between various aircraft based on specific and unique features - such as the presence or absence of “photon torpedoes” in a particular aircraft model.

In the current setup, I cannot re-define the “default” setup, as any attempt to edit and save it forces you to create a new, non-default, named profile.  If I try to name it “default” - I end up with a second and distinct “default” (that ISN’T the default), and it creates no end of difficulty.

What I want to do is to be able to take the default settings of a controller and modify those settings to be more suitable and generic to the way I want to use the controller, and have that become the new “default”.

How about creating the default you want and give it a name like “MyDefault”. Not exactly what you want but close and easily recalled. I don’t think you can actually change the real default.

I don’t use the in-sim profiles (I use SPAD.NeXT instead) but when I did I knew that I needed to either create a new profile, or copy profiles and edit them for my controllers. Usually I’d copy the default profile, rename the copy, and edit it for aircraft type (i.e. single-engine prop, multi-engine prop, etc.)

It’s really quite simple to copy the default profile(s) and edit them. Well…as easy as editing the MSFS profiles can be - which isn’t very easy at all.

Display the Default Preset that you want to modify.
Open the Preset Manager.
Click Duplicate.
Give it a name that you want.
Then change anything in it that you want.

MSFS will use this new preset until you change it to use another preset.
