Performance is much better and for third-party devs MSFS 2024 is the future (not making addons for both 2020 and 2024, just 2024) many of which have already dropped 2020. Some third-party devs don’t see the effort required to make addons work with both sims worth it. The amount of people using 2020 is only going to decrease.
For myself personally there is literally not one reason why I would use 2020 over 2024 these days and I’m not even interested in the selling point for 2024 which is it’s career mode. I use a ton of addons flying on the VATSIM and PilotEdge network. I also have a reliable 1Gbps connection.
The graphics in 2024 are not much over 2020 the aforementioned video illustrates that clearly. Certainly not like the Wow! moment when 2020 was released.
'“Microsobo are clearly no longer interested in 2020 and the new SIM has matured.”
Not for a few more years. 2020 will still be getting updated. 2024 simply does not offer the Wow! moment that 2020 brought to the table when released.
I moved over only in the last 2 or 3 months, and for me it was worth it, but mostly because I spend most of my time in IFR airliners and 2024 has been a bit smoother overall on my setup.
That said, I would not treat it as a clean replacement if your 2020 install is already stable and you rely on specific add-ons. I think the sensible approach is to keep 2020 around until the aircraft and utilities you care about are where you want them.
If you mainly want career mode, I would not upgrade just for that. If you want the better visuals and performance and do not mind a transition period, then yes, I think it can be worth it now.
I went ahead and just purchased 2024 today. One of the main reasons is the file size. I had to uninstall 2020 to make room for another game and I don’t have enough space on my other M.2 card. From all the reading I’ve done, seems not that much difference besides the new features in 2024 so why not have both. I do have a 2T card but not ready to install it yet. I’ll treat it the same way I treat 2020 and try and have fun in my own way. My flight stick been collecting dust and I miss flying.
I also spend most hours IFR in tubes so it sounds like it’s time to move. I’ll keep 2020 installed for the present or until I need the space.
Thank for the help.
I finally made the switch to 2024, bought it during the April sale. I just went with the standard edition this time, as I mostly fly 3rd party airliners.
The most frustrating thing for me has been the UI and the control bindings. Having to set that up all over again has been time consuming.
The part that I am pleased about is the increased performance, faster load times, and the visual improvements.
Totally agree. The UI and bindings in 2024 did my head in when trying to work out my Bravo throttle settings. Just couldn’t get it to work with so many other things binded to the same buttons..I’ve tried it twice now on gamepass and deleted it both times before the trial period was up. Has only cost me $1 so far.LOL.
Oh my, are you on Xbox trying to use FS2024 with the default gamepad bindings? OMG, my head exploded when I saw how many different things were bound to different gamepad key combinations, and how many were reused over and over.
I’m not an Xbox gamer myself. Is that what a lot of games are like? Holy Cow, do people actually remember all these combinations?
I use a gamepad with my laptop when I’m not at home on my desktop. I just erased the whole thing and assigned the commands I use. But, yeah, I was blown away looking at how complex the layout was.
