Is it worth to switch?

Hello Guys,

i have the chance to switch from Rift S to Quest 2 with Airlink cable by a good price.
Is it worth it?
My Rig is:
I7 700K Headed by 4.2 - 4.5 watercooled
GTX 1070Ti
32Gb Ram
Windows 11

kind regars

Someone here prefers the Rift S over the Quest 2. I went from an original Rift to a Quest 2, which is worth it. But unfortunately I can’t compare it to the S.

I run the quest 2 with the NIS scaler at 80% over virtual desktop, low latency options, and motion smoothing on I’m SteamVR with a GTX 1070.

Windows 11 is buggy with the Oculus Link cable but virtual desktop helps. But for that you need to hardwire the PC’s Ethernet to a good quality 5GHz AP.

Out the box experience was terrible! It took some tuning to get it dialed in.

Hey,

thy for the answer. My Pc is directly connected with Ehternet Cable.

What are the Issues with W11 ans Air Link Cable?

kind regards

Windows 11 has some performance enhancements for background processes that lowers the compute priority. Unfortunately, it impacts the Oculus Link in a negative way. Despite the Facebook money, Oculus hasn’t addressed the issue as of yet.

But there are workarounds! Running the Oculus service as a focused console window or using the 3rd party “Virtual Desktop” application.

It also think Oculus may be trying to get the “tethered” user base back.

Hey thx

ok i will see what happend to me the Headset arrives today.

Any other things whre i have to pay attention for it to the install Prozess or Settings that will be a “must”?

kind regarss

That’s a tough one but most people seem to have better results when using Virtual Desktop. Reddit and here are both full of people with Oculus Link issues (and the rare person saying I don’t have a problem). It is a paid application but may be worth getting. The paid part is the app on the Oculus headset and you run a service on the PC.

I did read Oculus is coming out with a new desktop experience that is native to the headset’s home. But that won’t help any for today.

My current setup:

  1. Virtual Desktop connection
  2. Virtual Desktop configured for low latency options under video
  3. NIS scaler application set to 80% and anywhere from 40% to 60% sharpening.
  4. There were a few tweaks on the NVIDIA panel I made. I’ll have to get those later.
  5. Motion smoothing turned on in SteamVR. I think it’s a must on a 1070 and was on by default.
  6. Steam virtual home turned off to prevent resource clashing when the sim is also running. Using VD also eliminates the Rift home, which can also resource clash with MSFS

Any one of those items is a whole large topic, but if you have been using a Rift S you are probably somewhat tuned in already.

Good luck. I’m curious to know how it goes.

Oh, another one that got me was not having a USB-C port on my PC. I added a PCIe card but I’ve heard a USB adapter and a powered USB hub also works. Some have said it works better than the onboard ports.

But since I use VD now I just use the Link cable on the charging adapter.

Hi,

i have tested the Quest the Picture i nervos in Oculus MenĂĽ with akitvatet PC Connection it is flickering a little bit with white flashes. When iam Sitting in the Sim i have good frames bit its nervos too.

virtual Desktop needs an seperate Router or? My PC is connected via Dlan Adapter direct with an Ehternetcable. So i dont know were i have to install an seperate router.

Also the Oxulux Software says iam connected with USB 2.0 but its not real i have USB C Port with USB 3.1 ASRock > Z270 Pro4 that my Mainboard and the Cable is this one https://www.amazon.de/Fasgear-Schnellladekabel-Stromversorgung-DatenĂĽbertragung-Videoausgang/dp/B07Y86RTS8/ref=asc_df_B07Y86RTS8/?tag=googshopde-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=473985501057&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1001266002738520302&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9043168&hvtargid=pla-1026481963912&psc=1&th=1&psc=1 so it is not true what the Software says i dont know why.

Edit: i find a solution for my USB2.0 Problem i had to activate XHCI Hand Off in Bios and now the Quest says all is ok. Also so the stutters and flickering in Oculus Menu are gone

You don’t need a separate router for the airlink or virtual desktop but it helps to be hard wired to the AP/router on the PC you are linking too. I assume that helps cut down on the amount of WiFi bandwidth the AP has to deal with.

Hey,

thats the problem i dont have any Wlan on my Pc  it is only connected with Ethernet and i dont
have an Wlan Adapter. The Router is on the Living Room which is 2 Floors Down iam sitting in the Attic of the House.

But i have to say i get it to work with FPS 22-24 on Ground and over 30 in the Air with FWB A32N.
Only thing is little stutters that feels like such a little lost of Tracking for a second sometimes but its Playble. And it much clearer and better like Rift S.

Any other Tips to get this little Issue off?

Thank you for you help

Do you use the NIS scaler? I can do 80% without noticing any resolution issues and it gives a large boost in performance. Not 3070 level type boost but it helps.

If on Windows 11 I would still run the Oculus service in console mode if you see any stutters.

Your FPS is higher than I get on my GTX 1070! But SteamVR fills in the gaps okay enough.

Are you using airlink the USB cable? The amount of WiFi bandwidth used isn’t crazy high.

Hey,

Yes i use the Nis Scaler but i have to take in MSFS 100 Open Xr 100 and 100 in NIs Scaler i must test a little bit more with it.

What do you mean with Consol Mode??

Its not the Original Cable i have linked my cable in the last Post.

Kind Regards

Yes, the console mode. My audio is terrible without it.

I suspect virtual desktop is handling the video but whatever plagues the link cable and video is still impacting audio.

Exactly every 8 seconds I get 3 audio stutters without the console mode running. It was driving me bonkers, lol. The perfect timing clued me in that it probably had something to do with system buffering or interrupts.

However, I don’t need to keep it focused like the solution for using the Oculus Link calls for.

I’m a glutton for punishment, so I’ll try using the Oculus link again to make sure my other tweaks haven’t fixed it.

Hi,

i have taken my stetting like this here Einstellungen fĂĽr MSFS 2020 VR mit RTX 2070 Super und der Quest 2 auf Ultra / Hoch in Deutsch!! - YouTube
Only my SIm Setting are a little bit different.

kind regards.

Hey,

so i have tested a little bit more but i cant take down the Renderscale in Sim with 80 in Sim
and 100 in Nis it looks not good. I dont know why.

In Oculus Software iam on 72Hz with 1.0 ist this a fact?

Also Objects Far Away looking muddy so i think i have taken lots of fine Tuning, any Tips for that?

kind regards

I’ve partly given in to some things just looking less than ideal in VR. However, I’ve been stunned in some circumstances how amazing it can also look too.

When I mess around on the ground with video quality I find I’m never satisfied. But once I start to just fly I’m quite happy.

Later today or this weekend I’ll post all my settings up for comparison. I think the 1070 with a Quest 2 should be a relatively common VR entry level point.

Also, I find the higher my altitude, the better things start to look. I had the A320 at 40k feet last night and I was blown away by the realism.

Here is a video.

There is a more involved way to also add a script to keep it active. However, I don’t need to do that for the audio improvements I get. But I’m using Virtual Desktop, which in theory should not need this workaround.

I’m the only one I’ve seen that seems to get that audio problem too.

This does not fix the video stutters for me with the Link cable in use. Which is why I’m using Virtual Desktop.

Hey,

thx i think tha can be help me most what i find are settings for RTX30 series
i must play and test with NIS OTT etc. its hard but i think the only way.

Ahh ok now i know what you mean with Consolemode i have tested it but it gives me no Changes.

Audio is by my side deaktivated i Play with 7.1 Headset.

kind regards

When I had audio stutters my external headset was working fine. That helped give me a clue.

Yes its the same here and what was your Point of that give you a clue?
