Is replay really that hard to do in game?

What i mean was after PC launch priority probably went to Xbox release. That the xbox release is the same mess as pc only makes it more obvious that they had not enough time. But the release date was allready set. Meaning most recources would be trying to make the xbox release as “ready” as can be.

I don’t act like everything is easy. The only thing is that a replay function should be one of the main features of any flight sim or any other simulator game wich contains some sort of action worth of replaying (and they all have). Basically it should have been included in the game from the very start. Somehow this didn’t happen and was allready a big thing even before release. From that point on asobo had mentioned multiple vague comments about it. That there’s too many other bugs to solve is not really a valid reason since they knew in what state the sim was going to be released. I agree with you though that many people have different personal opinions about what should be prioritized and what not. And yes many request are absolutely bonkers. But the replay system is not one of those. It’s a necessity for a flight sim to have. As other recent flight sims and all flight sims in the past have shown. Not even mentioning the content creators who help developers ALOT by promoting their games.

Well thanks for quoting me though.

These kind of request are mostly from a very small group of people. Most topics get either closed or get negative reactions from forum members. I highly doubt they have even a minimal impact on what asobo decides to prioritize. I actually seen this exact topic you are refering to and it was an absolute disgrace to see what some people think is important.

Nevertheless… A replay function should be available asap. I think most of us would agree with that. Though some will not care as much and rather see other things prioritize first.

I’ve fallen foul of that one.

Don’t disagree. I don’t play multiplayer, so the current capabilities of the free/payware work fine for me.

There are lots of “extra” features that replays could have that further complicate the picture, all of which are possible with the current free/payware products:

  • formation flying (so live flying alongside your own replay(s)
  • droping out of the replay into “live” - e.g. take a replayed fligth so far, then take over the controls
  • instant rewind - so instantly pause and wind back a few minutes to “try that dodgy landing again thanks”
  • auto record to video
  • ability to add text overlays
  • ability to auto switch cameras when viewing the replay

I was thinking more along the line of a couple minutes of replay at most. An instant high fidelity replay feature buffered in memory with the option to save to disk. I guess Asobo needs to figure out how to record the weather first. That would also open up playing with ‘old’ / historic weather data.

But it can of course also only save the plane telemetry for much longer. Then you can enjoy watching the journey under different conditions.

I think most people simply want an instant landing replay like you had in FSX. The last x seconds to view the landing from different angles. Ignoring everything else that goes on around you, it should be straightforward, record telemetry and control surfaces. Yet maybe there are some snags with all the different planes and different controls making it not as straightforward.

How do third party replays do it? Do they somehow disable the flight computer, overriding auto thrust etc?

I think the third party software simply pushes the aircraft position/settings data into the sim to essentially override the in sim live calculations. So it replays the flight “as is” ignoring any inputs from the sim completely.

Strange things can happen though. So if you are replaying and in the replay interact with the controls using mouse or mapped buttons, you can definitely confuse things. Also I don’t think everything is recorded in terms of inputs- eg garmin programming. No flight plan is loaded in the FMC.

It of course doesn’t record weather or other planes etc.

Sim rate does affect the passage of time, even on full live mode. Stutters also affect the passage of time. When the sim still had terrible memory leaks I noticed the time falling behind the more the sim was stuttering.

Pause doesn’t stop time, time keeps going at the current sim rate, but the time can fall behind from stutters. Maybe going into the control bindings menu actually stops things. Just pressing esc keeps things going.

Sim rate affects the speed of your plane and fauna. But doesn’t affect the speed of weather, nor car traffic and AI planes. Sim rate also skips simulation steps rather than perform them at a faster rate, hence the dolphening effect on AP at high sim rate.

Which adds another question, what should a replay feature do when sim rate is used.

Excellent question. Third party replays record the advanced sim rate speed - so the sim rate follows what you set when it us replayed.

Also, just to confirm - if you pause with a high sim rate, time continues to pass at the higher speed. As does fuel consumption, as I’ve found to my cost!

Edit- I think higher sim rate does affect real-time traffic

I think the players aircraft will go invisible for other players while in replay mode. They allready have that feature when going to close other aircrafts and when in the menu.

I dunno about that either. Since I never change SimRate. I cleared my keyboard binding into an empty profile, so the keybind for changing the simrate no longer applies. I always run at 1x real time all time. Even on long haul flights where I fly 10 hours. I fly the whole 10 hours in real time. But either way, it’s irrelevant now since I always fly on Locked Live Multiplayer.

I agree with you in a sense. The more important bugs should be addressed first but they should also implement some new features as well in a timely fashion.

Fair point, but these tools were developed by some guys in their homes free of charge and a lot of mods (not all) fix or improve things in this software better than this Asobo studio does. Also, it seems to be the case that every update is a downgrade. Never seen this in my life. The only good thing they have is the engine and half baked. Their software functionality is flawed in every aspect and there are bugs in everything.
If I could get my money back, including what I’ve spent on the Marketplace I would abandon this platform completely. If things aren’t at least mildly fixed by SU6 I’d be done since this sim is more of a hassle than fun or interesting at this point.

well the word is priority… it’s not a must have in the sun as compared to rest of the stuff they might be working on
