100%. It’s why nVidia are holding back on GPU chip supply to their board partners to keep availability low and demand (and prices) high.
like i said, that’s just speculation.
IM not so HO there are only two maybe three laws in life.
- Gravity - If ya jump off a building sooner or later you will hit the ground.
- Death - Nobody gets out of here alive.
- Supply and Demand - Prices will go down when supply goes up or demand goes down. Prices go up when demand goes up or supply goes down.
dw
Very true ! That is the Law of Supply and Demand.
Even if it is artificially created.
I agree on the price gouging. This 1080 (no ti) of mine has been running pretty good over the years and i was hoping the 4070 or 7900 XT would bring some relief with an overall more appreciative price, but it appears our GPU manufacturers have found alot of interest in deep pockets of users… The realm of high-end GPU’s has always sort of phased me as “for the geeks”, somehow finding myself leaning towards that catagory as well, but just not willing to dosh out that much for “just a part in my computer”.
I find the lack of interest in the new GPU’s quite fascinating, as with 2019/2020/2021 the market grabbed up everything it could muster, the market seems quite satisfied now and seeing these GPU’s now slowly dropping towards the range i’d like to pay, is very nice to see and makes me actually think that those creditcards are now actually being payd off and people realising they’ve been had.
It just doesn’t make sence to me to pay the same for a GPU, that i’ve already payd for upgrading my pc when msfs2020 first was announced…especially, since i’ve actually always been 2 steps under the top level cards anyways.. i just dont think it’s reasonable to go for the overpriced aspects of the cards out there, and i’m glad to see business is not booming as much as they had projected their shareholders. I just dont think it’s worth the sillymoney that some can splurge on just another GPU. Happy for them, just dont think it’s worth the price for one component.
That was back when Crypto was hot. Crypto is dead at the moment, so the “latest” GPU farms are no longer as financially viable, so demand dropped through the floor.
To answer the OP’s original question, is the PC Market dying because of greed? No.
Other forces may eventually kill it, but, not for a long time.
Is it a bummer we can’t have cheap top of the line graphic processors? Yes
It’s funny though, because hanging in flightsim discussion groups you’d think things were ok. No shortage of people buying top end gear. I too refuse to support nVidia and AMD’s price gouging.
Until 2020, PC sales stayed around 275-280 million units, but due to Covid and work-from-home mandates, PC sales in 2020 came to 302.6 million units. In 2021, global PC sales shot to 348.8 million sold. It was up 14.8% over 2020 and was the highest since 2012.
The International Data Corporation (IDC) recently updated its forecast for PC and tablet markets and said that, "tumultuous times are ahead for the PC and tablet markets according to a new forecast from the International Data Corporation ( IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker*.
Global shipments of traditional PCs are forecast to decline 12.8% in 2022 to 305.3 million units, while tablet shipments will fall 6.8% to 156.8 million. Inflation, a weakening global economy, and the surge in buying over the past two years are the leading causes for the reduced outlook.
*Further contraction is also expected in 2023 as consumer demand has slowed, the education demand has been largely fulfilled, and enterprise demand gets pushed out due to worsening macroeconomic conditions. The combined market for PCs and tablets is forecast to decline 2.6% in 2023 before returning to growth in 2024."
So the answer to your question is, No. Please provide direct links to your evidence (as I have) that PC sales have declined 30%. Vague, imprecise pronouncements such as “I’ve read somewhere”, or “Someone has told me” are unhelpful and add nothing meaningful to the discussion.
“Is the PC Market Dying Because of Greed?” - if the PC market really is dying, it’s because of progress.
You can do most things on a smartphone that you used to need a PC for and a games console is also smaller, cheaper and easier to use than a PC.
As office equipment however, I expect the future of the PC will be pretty secure - for as long as people need offices to work in…
Very true.
At one stage families needed a PC for checking email, doing the family accounts and for the kids to do homework on (supposedly - they were actually on ICQ chatting) .
Now email is no longer a thing except for work, the accounts and online shopping happens on a tablet and the kids do their homework on a laptop or tablet the school made the parents buy.
PCs are just for office work and gaming.
PC’s soon will be just used for big business, science and for programming and all else will be virtualised, gaming and simming included. Of course performance won’t be any less than with today’s best hardware so that should be a godsend for most of us… but unfortunately free content is likely to fall victim as will any genuine possibilities for modding etc. We will likely need a rasberry pi sized box to plug our controllers into and of course screen(s) or VR and internet, that’s it.
It is interesting that you are a bit harsh in your questioning of my sources… Like I am making this up or trying to promote some agenda… If you search around , cnn, fox, abc and several other data sources you will know I am pretty accurate with my 30 % comment ! I do not have time to list more…
It is very evident that the PC and Hardware sales and DROPPED DRAMATICALLY …
