Is the weather ever accurate with rain? Any mod to turn off terrible lightning?

Any time there is rain I have thunder and lightning currently. Besides that MSFS2020 is sorta accurate compared to my window view. Any mod to just turn off the thunder and lightning effect available? The current implementation is just terrible!

Sadly not. This has been asked several times now since they marked weather as “fixed” 2 patches ago and introduced this beautiful, but terrbily overdone thunder and lightning everywhere there’s cloud cover. The SDK doesn’t allow the 3rd party access to the weather required to do that.

You could try Unreal weather, its free and does a good job of rendering the weather.

Thanks for the tip… Just started messing with the Unreal add on. So far it’s WAY better then the current lousy weather injection. Need to test it some more…

So far my testing has proven “Unreal” is WAY better then default weather injection engine in MSFS2020. How can it this be this bad?! Unreal was DEAD-ON w/ the weather I was expecting looking out my window. MSFS has been wrong every time, and I’m in a populous US region.

Careful with that kind of talk, you’re sure to be met with people telling you that METAR’s have no bearing in the real world and don’t accurately reflect the weather that is occurring…

Unreal is a great backup when the default weather is having a bad day.

Big fan of yours, first time responding to you. Has there been any comparison between Unreal Weather and REX?

Edit: the two “actual live weather” players in this ■■■■■■ fight.

As another user (daring) to look for, bi-golly,“live weather”, I’d like to know.

Well, being free Unreal is very basic, just METAR’s fed into the sim, it has its limitations, simulated winds aloft, if the clouds are higher FL120 and the METAR says clear you’ll have clear skies instead of high-level clouds. Obviously, transitions aren’t as pretty as dynamic weather but the latest update does improve them and makes it less obvious that the clouds are changing.

It does a good job for low and slow VFR flying, I wouldn’t use it though for jet work.

Regarding REX, I haven’t bought it yet, I’ve thought about it but there is a lot of feedback on it being extremely buggy and being pretty sloppily coded to brute force its way into the sim. Using actual winds aloft data interests me but I’ve heard mixed things on that as well.

Though missing basic things like humidity and creating low visibility the default weather engine LOOKS great and when it works it’s ■■■■ good. But having no ability to pull that weather info for flight planning and the ATIS being bogus every time, it makes every flight I take with it a total crapshoot. At least with Unreal, I know what to expect when I take off and land, and enroute.

@SoloTwo42 Yeah, I found it works well as a good weather “backup”. When the weather is ridiculous (which is 50/50) with “Live Weather” I flip over to this add-on. But lacking weather reporting (using Live) in game still makes the built-in weather PITA. Pretty slick little add-on…
