Is there any way to monitor network performance within MSFS?

I have experienced and read many reports of variable performance with no apparent cause.

I am wondering if the throughput of the CDN could affect performance, but haven’t been able to find any network monitoring tools (e.g. for dropped packets) within MSFS.

My theory is that if the server’s reliability is degraded, this could lead to higher CPU overhead when processing cloud data, impacting game performance, which is already CPU limited.

I can’t really be bothered filtering through Wireshark or anything like that, but if there is a handy in game monitoring tool that might be useful.

Hi,

Notice same for long time…
When server is busy , game have worst performance, as nothing other change in my end.

If I fly calm day, its smooth and sometimes very smooth as silk.

Also area you fly is a big parameters, for example Paris busy, Africa smooth.

Same - variable server related problems (Lincoln, UK).

In addition I get at least 4 disconnects over an hour of flying. (nothing wrong with my internet connection as I have other online MS addons working fine)

For me, this does not bode well for FS2024.

Thanks but:

“WinMTR is a free MS Windows visual application that combines the functionality of the traceroute and ping in a single network diagnostic tool.”

Neither of those tools are useful here.

We need network monitoring within MSFS to know what is happening.

The only external tool I can think of that would potentially be useful here is wireshark, but that’s a whole lot of effort, especially when not knowing exactly what to look for to begin with.

Sounds more like a internet issue at your side (home or isp) if you have that many disconnects.

Everything else is during these times fine.Only the sim is causing problems.

As far as I know there’s no in-game network monitoring/debugging tools.

What I guess you might want to do is identify which servers the game is connecting to, then ping them manually to confirm that the route to them is laggy or losing packets…

…but I don’t know if there is a simpler way to do that just whipping out Wireshark, alas.

I am in UK as well and I very rarely experience disconnects. Maybe 4 in a month, definitely not in an hour!

I was told to use CfosSpeed but i couldn’t figure it out fully. All i could do was to see real time upload download usage while playing, i am not sure if we can see dropped packets etc and more. 5 6 Years ago i used it on Nvidia Geforce NOW tests (can see here on bottom right side cfosspeed. Top right is GFNow detailed telemetry results including network, packages and more) Imgur: The magic of the Internet

All other internet connects are fine - only FS2020.

You are fortunate. I do recall MS mentioning that ‘disconnects’ are a ‘local’ issue but I never see any other issues with programs / games / connectivity, etc.

I have tried other server locations but not noticed an improvement.

The problem happens the most when I fly from RAF Coningsby (my local airfield) - no idea why???

The topics question was if there is some monitoring “within” MSFS. For 2020 the answer seems to be “no” … for 2024 Sebastian did mention in one of the interviews that they added network usage monitoring to the dev mode.

To be more precise I think 2024 will show you the “throughput”. But it might be more interesting to understand the latency distribution or the retransmissions/packet loss etc.

If you (more or less) only run MSFS on your PC then you should be able to gain useful “throughput” information via the “Performance → Network” view of the regular Windows “Task Manager”.

That however will not help to understand issues like the mentioned “disconnect” issues. IMHO it is not clear what MSFS considers a “disconnect”. If those are system level TCP timeouts or system level TCP close event … or if the application applies its custom timeout management.

I do hope that the FPS impact of poor server response times (and/or rolling cache lookup times) will no longer exist in 2024 … as the new multithreading design should allow to decouple frame rendering from data fetching/preprocessing.

Time will tell.

Is it payware or a freeware airport that I can have a look at?

Edit: Is it this one? https://flightsim.to/file/10045/egxc-raf-coningsby
It’s not available for download anymore it seems…

I had the freeware version initially, then I bought it via the market place to support the dev - it is very good.

Ah okay, probably the reason why it’s not there anymore then.

Do you have any specific external apps that are loaded for FS?

Usually Real ATC and Navigraph Charts.

Dont know about Real ATC but I use the Navigraph package and no issues with that.

I would start with checking what programs and services are running. And/or ask your ISP if they can do some checks depending on what connection and hardware you have.

The other most likely cause for disconnects is loosing connection to the Xbox Live service, the streaming data servers are as far as I know not causing disconnects.

Thank you.

I have isolated the issue I have to FS or Xbox.

The disconnects are not as bad when I fly in the US??

WYSIWYG …
