I’m currently looking for a new pc so I can play MSFS in vr. The rtx4090 is a bit too expensive for me so I’d go with the msi rtx4080 in combination with the AMD Ryzen 9 7900x3d.
Is that a good setup for MSFS with a Reverb G2 v2? Can it handle ultra settings?
Totally. Just make sure you have matching RAM sticks for good timings, that‘s essential. And don‘t expect any magic, the weakest part is MSFS‘s VR implementation. In any case use the OpenXR toolkit companion. An X3D with a 4080 or 4090 is currently the best setup for flightsim.
But…: I wouldn‘t go MSI.
That’s a tricky question
I’m going to say NO, if you feel you could have all settings at Ultra in VR.
I have a 4080 and in VR it still feels like I need more. Please know that I am content with the outcome because there is nothing more I can do but get a 4090. MSFS is not at the point where I want to put even more money into it.
Yesterday I flew, and it was amazing, and it thrilled me in the Sim. However, that changes from day to day in the Sim because of performance.
I don’t regret getting the 4080 (FE) and I can only hope the Sim gets better for VR in time.
Good Luck
Why no msi?
I went for a13700k with 4090. 39fps with reverb above new york(sam scene) in all ultra and lod 250/300.
35 fps with Fenix. If you really want it to be perfect go 4090 you will not regret the last money you spent. I searched and found a machine with 3tb ssd, 4090, 32g 6000ddr5 and 13700k with aircooling which works great for 3500 euro. Totally worth it ![]()
I have msi 4090 and previously a msi 3090, no issues at all. Good cooling on the top end cards too.
The more personal but less forum CoC happy answer would be: They have four mondays in a week and on friday it’s a holiday. Or another analogy: It’s like shopping in Pond Inlet: A correctly working graphic card behind every tree.
the more factual reply: They have had a lot of quality problems in the past and when people reached out there was little attempt to get it resolved. Sure, there is of course plenty good material but the general rate of faulty hardware has been relatively high. I would like to say “was” but I can’t put my hand on that.
But then there was also this:
I’m a little reluctant to get MSI hardware. From my experience and from various website tests there are very good alternatives, Zotac, Asus, EVGA…
Definitely get the 7800x3D over the 7900x3D, maybe that could even help you get a 4090. 7900x3D only has 6 vcache cores
I have a 5800X3D and 4080 with a G2 and I find it very balanced in MSFS VR, being sometimes slightly CPU limited and mostly GPU limited.
While I get very good performance for my settings and render resolution (160 OXR and DLSS Quality), I am not able to run everything at ultra without dropping performance below what I find acceptable. Nonetheless, I have everything set to a level where I am unable to discern a noticeable enough difference going to ultra, so it is not of great concern to me. If you really want ultra everything, then a 4090 is what you want.
Re CPU, as @BearsAreCool510 says, I’d go the 7800X3D over the 7900X3D, unless you really need those extra non-3D cores for productivity tasks.
If like me MSFS is your main aim and not productivity, go for a 7800x3D and a 4090. Heck, even my 5800x3D with my Asus 4090 still knocks my socks off with a G2, or my Pico 4 for that matter. If the Pimax Crystal pans out (or something better actually comes along) you may want to buy one and they will both definitely need at least a 4090.
