When you file your plan there’s a set of checkboxes to tell the controller if you have send/receive voice capability, receive only, or text only. If you left it on send & receive they might have been confused why you were using text? For the audio issues double check setttings/audio make sure you’ve set a push to talk key, etc. and check your Windows sound settings.
