Is weather constantly updated over time?

I’m curious if MSFS takes a single ‘snapshot’ of the current weather and uses it throughout my entire flight, or if weather is constantly updated to reflect actual current reports for my location.

In other words, if I left a plane sitting on the tarmac and the sim running for many days, would I see the weather change dynamically to match real-world weather or would it remain static until I start a new flight?

Thanks!

I have seen the weather change appropriately along the course of my flight many times. But I can’t answer your question definitively.

In fact, it happened just today. It was raining when I got in, and by the time I finished the flight, it had stopped and brightened, and the same had happened in the sim.

Hi there,

When I got into the sim yesterday it was raining cats and dogs outside but there was not a cloud in the sky in the sim. I repeated a flight 4 or 5 times during the day and the results were the same.
So based on that I think you get a “snapshot” of what the weather is when the sim starts.

Had during preflight last week that it was raining like… with strong east winds, and when I went for taxi and takeoff it dried up and winds were less severe.

No . It is not. Not now. Not in my experience.
Period.

Umm, yup…
If you have live weather active. Left my Baron parked on the ramp at my home field last night after a beautiful late evening flight in cold, clear skies. (forgot to shut down, sidetracked) Woke up this morning to rain and fog. Walked past my computer and guess what? Rain and fog at the airport too.

Yes, it’s being updated. You can check that by just staying at any point and watch. You can also use mods that can read the weather from the sim (for instance the FBW A32NX can source METARs from the sim).

Because of the forecast nature of the weather model, it is not always conforming to the current real world METARs, but this too has improved lately for me. On my last flight I flew near some thunderstorms that were also present in reality and made the flight I replicated divert from the planned route to evade those.

Thanks for all the responses. I ran an experiment today and flew 4 consecutive flights without restarting the sim. (it was a long day of flying, lol)

  • KDTW to KJFK then back to KDTW
  • then -
  • KDTW to KRDU then back to KDTW

When I started this morning, the weather in Detroit was heavy rain and overcast. After my first return to Detroit, the rain had stopped and visibility improved quite a bit. After my final flight, the clouds had thinned and the sun started to show itself.

At least for me, it seemed to be dynamic and real-time. I live an hour from KDTW and can confirm that the weather seemed fairly accurate (at least for where I live). I don’t remember it being that way in the past, but I’ve never done a long-tern test like I did today.
