Is Wind Overdone?

I sim quite a bit with live weather in my local area and the wind just seems way more intense in the sim than when I’m outside.

The current METAR has the winds at 9 knots and the sim METAR matches. In the sim it is howling like a hurricane. Outside IRL the trees are still, and I hear no actual wind.

I know 9 knots is not insignificant when it comes to small aircraft. Perhaps it’s the way METAR data is reported?

I dont know if its a thing but in my area i get the impression that the weather in the sim is late. About 2 hours or so.

It’s usually close for me. Every so often there is a discrepancy.

I’ve been wondering if the METAR is a worse case scenario? It’s just not usually as sustained as reported. The sim really keeps it sustained.

The sim may also be overdoing the wind sounds to compensate for lack of feel. The 9 knots as reported sounds like 30-35 MPH tropical storm level.

That observation is from where you are living or at an airport close by ?
I am asking that because if your IRL observation is made where you are living and you are a couple of miles away from the airport (from the METAR station), then it is not the wind from the METAR you’ll observe but the wind coming from Meteoblue that can be quite different.

It’s an airport a few miles away. Sometimes I cross reference the METAR from Meteoblue on the aviation tab for the airport or direct from from LiveATC.

Then there is a the world map weather, which often changes after launching.

Whatever they all say, real life observations tend to be less wind and fewer clouds than what’s usually simulated.

Overall, what should be the correct active runway in the sim usually matches the real world traffic pattern in use. AI traffic is another matter and multiplayer is chaos . It’s 6 runways, so can change quite a bit.

Some airports are coded with “preferred runways” flag - not all, which can create unexpected arrival circumstances and behavior regardless of current METAR. :sunglasses: One of the fine legacies of FSX.

Interesting, the one I’m talking about usually seems okay with landing traffic. It does have weird problems with AI ground traffic.

I rebuilt all the runways and taxiways. So I’ve debugged and checked a thousand times over, lol. AI traffic just gets lost and zombies around.

I’ve suspected there are issues on complex layouts when there is no ATC tower.

But I have seen the behavior you mention at some larger airports.

In my experience flying into KDEN and KDAL in the sim the wind effect on the B737-700 I use is the opposite of what it should be. If the weather is reporting calm winds it seems like the sim puts in almost a hurricane effect on the plane. And if the winds are reported to be strong then I have almost no wind effect on the aircraft. Others have reported similar effects before. It’s like the wind effects are backwards from what they should be.

Under done, particularly turbulence.
