I wanted to write these few lines, because I too, some time ago, was one of those haters who published at least once a post with a tempting title, expressing a consumer dissatisfaction too eager to have perfection. I was wrong and I apologize to the developers for being so slanderous.
I was just a jerk who didn’t take the time to optimize the game at the settings level, who only swore by 4K 60fps, and always wanted more. I spent more time in my settings sliding sliders than flying, and contemplating. I was spending more time in my bios risking burning my CPU with overclocking to gain 3 fps than trying to do nice flights, exploring, traveling … which is utter nonsense.
For 2 days, I have found the settings that perfectly match my use, I switched to 1080p and I am not more unhappy, because it must be said, the game is magnificent, and the more I fly at above my magnificent country of France, the more I hallucinate that we have at our disposal such a beautiful simulator, and promised such a bright future, when we think that it was released barely 5 months ago! Good work ! I’m even more excited about the VR coming up, although I know it won’t be perfect at first. In any case one thing is certain, I will never again come to complain publicly when it is me who am not screwed to use the product correctly.
Thank you Asobo, thank you Microsoft, and let’s go on a great adventure !
I respect your opinion and I agree the visuals are really great. However, the rest of the simulator isn’t so great in my opinion. There is a lot of missing functionality compared to FSX, take the FSX G1000 for example, that thing was way more functional. I wish other parts of the simulator were as big of a leap forward as the graphics…
You may want to try 4K at 50% render scale and you’ll notice exactly the same performance, but everything will be sharper. The game will be rendering at 1080p and upscaling your pixels 1:1 at 4K, vs running at 1080 (not your panel’s native resolution) where each in-game pixel is using up 4 physical pixels on the panel.
It takes a mature person to make such a public admission.
But the only important thing is that YOU are now happy and looking forward to the sim getting better and better.
Well, you are not alone in this obsession to achieve an optimised sim. I would guess that in Xplane 11 I spent about 55% of my time tweaking and hacking settings and only about 45% of my time actually simming.
Thankfully, for me, FS2020 is a lot more optimised and I no longer tweak at all. I just spend all my time flying or downloading some mods which interest me. It’s a new experience for me and a very welcome one.
I didn’t mention that when I switched to 1080p, I also swich my screen to a 1080p screen. But I still have the 4K one. Do you mean that I should play on my 4K screen at render scale 50 ?
If you’re using a 1080p, then all should be fine. But if you prefer your 4K screen for whatever reason, you can do what I said. It should net you exactly the same performance numbers because it’s still rendering at 1080p, only upscaling to 4K.
Either way, whatever works best for you. Just don’t run at native 1080p on a 4K monitor. That will make things jaggy and ugly, particularly text.
