It's time for ray-tracing!

unfortunately ray tracing on clouds is still missing in 2024… maybe it will be implemented in the future… I hope so

Yea, i keep seeing previews where they hype up ray tracing, many of which not pointing out that it’s only in the cockpit. Personally my biggest visual gripe with 2020 are the screen space reflections & that’s the same with 2024 unfortunately.

I can see why limiting Ray Tracing would be desirable if it other aspects can’t be enabled/disabled within the sim itself.

I’d love to see screen space reflections working in the sim with my 3090 Ti, and have the option to turn it off if it chokes on it. Not sure that’s possible, though. If it is possible to make it an option in the sim, then why wouldn’t they? Maybe they’re considering it in the future, and want to start small.

still on the clouds we have the ray marching Which makes the clouds grainy even if they are very dense… I don’t understand why they can’t put an on/off… surely in addition to the lighting which now seems to be good we would finally have the right reflections on the clouds and the right penetration of the light… guys I will open a wishlist on this I hope it gets a lot of votes…

I was looking at some other RT videos/benchmarks and at 4K games were going from over 100fps on a 4090 down to like 38 with RT on. Is this really such an important thing?

Ray tracing isn’t ‘all-or-nothing’, as 2024 implementing it for direct shadows shows. I’m pretty certain that won’t cause performance to drop by 60%.

Water reflections stick out as the other obvious thing which could be drastically improved by RT. I’d expect Asobo have looked into this but for one reason or another decided it’s not practical just yet. One issue might be the fact that water often takes up a large area of the screen, making it computationally expensive.

Asobo has not done a lot of ray tracing in their engine so far. Look at A Plague’s Tale 1 & 2 and MSFS 2020.

I think it is as simple as that.

We will not get advanced ray tracing features until they add those to their game engine.

And it really looks like engine tweaks such as improved multithreading and scalability took most of their manpower this time out.

Ray tracing only works in a limited capacity on Xbox, and it is a resource hog on PC, so I can understand why it isn’t a huge priority.

I would love to see ray traced clouds and reflections, but thankfully the Earth at altitude is only lit by one light source. The stuff closest to you is the most important to appreciate ray tracing.

Ironically, ray tracing would most benefit things like walking around a ship after you land on it!

Were it my sim, I would have added full ray tracing by now, but it isn’t and they haven’t.

I hope they add ReSTIR GI Path Tracing in the future Sim versions… Msfs2028? Or 2024 hangar? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_toA8lErAHg

But i will be happy inside my cockpits with normal raytraced sharp shadows for now

I share again

Don’t understand why you’re posting this here. It isn’t ray tracing.

have you seen the video? it talks about how it improves ray tracing on clouds…

Where is the term ‘ray tracing’ used?

Your previous post complains that MSFS is using ray marching, but that’s exactly what the techniques in the video are based on.

I think we’re a couple generations of GPUs out before RT becomes another forgotten setting like anistropic filtering

precisely it was to show that the system to implement it already exists…you just need to create the algorithm and see how many frames decrease…

They are only using ray tracing in the cockpits… they specifically said that…

MS/Asobo talk of improved lighting and color palate for clouds, but do not say it is ray traced. And it would be a big deal in here if the HAD said it was ray traced.

no guys I simply posted this video to show that it can be done … I know very well that ray tracing on clouds is not implemented yet … it was to discuss a little and understand if the future is bright from this point of view …

Sorry. I misunderstood your post.

No doubt clouds could benefit from RT.

I just don’t think Asobo has anything in their engine yet to do it!

I’m good with that. I think half the GPU’s people are playing on will still have to turn just that off. I’m all about 2020 upgraded in 2024 with realized features, more detailed environment, better resources for FM, a revamped UI and fleshing out with fluidity as the ‘features’, I’m pretty ok with the way things look now from a graphic technological perspective. Use the improved pipelines for game functionality first and foremost.
