You would see a similar thing with the 530. When tuned, it will only show its ident. when you are close enough.
Interestingly, I’m sure I’ve seen VOR reception come, and go, when flying around British Columbia. I’m not sure if attenuation of signal due to hills, and valleys is simulated, but it seemed like it as I was always heading towards the VOR.
