VORs have a quite long range (more than 150nm) while VORDME often have just ~38nm. You can see the range in LNM when showing details of the navaid.
Also the sim simulates the signal attenuation (not sure how precise that is though).
The ident in GNS530 is taken from the database with a bigger radius (just to avoid issues with overlapping frequencies).
