I have not renewed my licence in years. Yes, it’s costly to get but at the time, I could (and did) justify the “one time” investment. I was not thinking ahead in how expensive it is to continue to fly. At my club, you had to log at least one hour every 60 days or you would need to pay for a check ride again. Cost on that day: appx $500. (one hour to drive to the club, an hour back, lunch, aircraft rental and avgas). Buying my own Cessna or Piper would cost a lot more. It’s not a budget hobby. Real or simulated.
