Normally you take off and climb and wait until you are at the vector spot out past airport to turn left or right on the out pattern then past the back side and engage AP. THe reason is if you did not program or import all vectors for the proper pattern, you end up turning and crossing over the airfield (a no no). USe the map to see the pattern and do your best then engage when heading the direction of the destination but not over the place you took off from.
