Laptop Memory

Question: Would a 16GB to 32GB memory upgrade alone improve anything?

I’m currently using a 2 1/2 year old HP Omen 15 gaming laptop to run MSFS 2020. (i7-8750H CPU @ 2.2GHZ, 16GB memory 2667mhz, GTX 1060 and internet download about 21-22. MSFS runs okay at mid-level resolution settings with only an occasional “pause” while running. I understand that the GTX 1060 keeps me from even considering VR.

I am not ready to replace this otherwise perfectly-running and powerful laptop. I understand very little can be done to upgrade the main processing issues because they are supposedly part of the motherboard. So, what would a would a memory upgrade do, if anything?

I would watch your memory utilization in Task Manager while flying in a heavy scenery area. I have a laptop that came with 16 and I upgraded “just because”. I don’t recall having overall better FPS, but it heavier areas with addons (like DC Chicago or Paris), the additional memory seems to help FPS stay more steady, but still lower than I would like.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks sttovo. I’ll get familiar with the task manager and use it to evaluate the memory.

I have similiar thinking as @sttovo .

Possible not realy more FPS, but more “smooth”. While playing the game you need overall 32Gig memory and what you not own as “physical RAM” comes from the pagefile. With 16Gig you need a huge “pagefile”, which lies on your SSD. ( a SSD by itself have limited write-cycles… )

Thank you. Even at my age, I learn something every day. Pagefile is a new one to me. I watched the memory resources today as a flew over a big city. Of my 16GB memory, I had one 1MB free at times so it has to be using that pagefile a lot. I also had a few pauses (very short freezes) on the screen at times so, you both showed me I could use 32GB memory. I ordered another 16 today.
