Guys, if it works for you personally that doesn’t mean it works for everyone.
I can’t even start a flight because it has been downloading the scenario around the depature airport since 15 mins. The “low bandwidth” error also popped up but I’ve checked my bandwith right before having started FS2024. I have ~250 Mbit/s download. So it’s Microsoft’s servers that are the bottleneck.
The cloud solution sucks if it doesn’t provide the server and network capacity to satisfy their paying customers! I’d prefer to download 1TB of content to my harddisk rather than praying every time I play that the streaming works …
Get over it guys, data streaming is not going anywhere. After watching today dev livestream, Asobo seems to be very happy with how streaming is working.
Number of people playing FS2024 is dropping day by day so this problem will solve itself :).
They kept saying downloading 1.5 TB is impossible which is objectively not true but I think they meant impractical. The tone was clear though, they think streaming content is the future, and may concede some downloading only due to pressure, but ultimately want to move away from it.
I think we can expect downloading of specific assets likes planes and stuff. Downloading regional data might happen. The future for having data local is bleak though when it comes to MSFS. I doubt future iterations of this game will have this ability.
Whoooo so much for the “all you need for MSFS2024 is 100Mb bandwidth”
Look at the amount of time above 200 and the peaks at 300 Mb(?) +
I don’t have anything like that available.
I saw the same dev stream and obviously they told that you’ll be able to offline install packages you want. So it will in fact be the same way MSFS 2020 did it if you want to - select the aircraft and other packages like World Update POIs, select install and that’s about it.
“[…] or a permanent install in that case, for example, if you always fly the same plane and you don’t want to have a very big cache, like maybe you only want to have eight (GB) - or maybe no cache, then it’s good to permanently install your plane because you always have it, you will not stream it again - or maybe you always fly the same airports, or as I said earlier you wanna go on vacation to a low bandwidth area, you can just preinstall a few aircraft and a few airports. So that’s something we will make possible which will pretty much make it the same as it used to be in 2020 […]”
It does go this high on settings which are not available on the settings page, so way beyond “Ultra” settings
This obviously is not something considered on the general specs.
In my region many providers state in their contracts the bandwidth you pay for is the possible maximum. But there is no guarantee it will not drop.
And boy, it drops. At times when load is high, like people watching TV over internet in the evening my bandwidth may drop from 350 to 50 Mbits and fluctuate. In some regions it’s even worse. And it differs by what medium is used (glass vs. copper vs. 4G/5G).
Much work should be put into development of the code for streaming so everybody can enjoy the sim.
I did a little unscientific research today and found out that in the past ISPs throttled back on content from Azure servers… I don’t know about the here and now, but I’m not hugely optimistic of a trouble free future with FS2024…
I’m glad to hear that things are working well for you. However, it’s unnecessary to flaunt your success by disregarding the issues others are facing. Such an attitude suggests that if the roles were reversed, you would be quite vocal and enthusiastic about your own problems. I hope you wouldn’t appreciate someone telling you that your concerns don’t matter simply because they don’t affect them directly.

Microsoft didn’t intend for the sim to be run at 2000 TLOD like some are suggesting they could theoretically do. It may be considered modding and would be outside the normal use case of the sim (eg. if you tweak settings that high and get ■■■■ performance, not our problem). Their warranty or EULA wouldn’t cover that. Most of the time it’s sold “as is”. Any modifications to the settings outside of the sim would not be covered or supported.
Which is why I pointed that out once again - as I intentionally did that for the testing purpose some posts above (to enforce more data to be streamed from servers).
It’s cheaper for them, less people needed day to day. Bean counters at work. People happy with this are oblivious to the long term consequences of operating cheap to make more money. I get it, they don’t work for nothing. But they’ve taken what was promised to a new low.
I agree and have made a few posts and a topic about this, actually about 18 months ago when the “thin client” first got announced.
Rolling cache just saves data AFTER it’s been downloaded. So if the user’s connection or the servers aren’t able to fully handle streaming the airport in real-time as you come in to land for the first time (quite likely at complex airports I would say), rolling cache can’t solve that.
It sounds like they will let us choose to fully install aircraft and airports which is good, but I’m not clear if that is just add-on /marketplace airports or every single airstrip in the game. If its the former, I would really like to see a pre-caching system where the game starts pre-caching/downloading the route and destination from the flight planner screen.
I really think there should also always be default runway textures saved on the local machine as a fallback for whenever the accurate runway is not fully loaded in. In MSFS2020 we never had to land on blurry runways!
Wait, wait, wait, did they say option C explicitly?
Because if it’s true (I’m waiting for your answer), it would be acceptable for me, who has a gigabit connection, to download those 1.3TB in less than 4 hours.
But now another question comes up, in case of an internet outage, will I be able to play it like 2020 with its offline patch and skip the grey screen “that requires permanent internet”, it would be excellent news, for the peace of mind of the consumer (you, me, and the rest of those who play), as well as the preservation of the game.
Very interesting, I followed the Developer stream but not being a native English speaker I missed several things.
Are you 100% sure about this? It would be very helpful to be able to choose between these three options.
