I currently have the Alienware AW3423DW which im very happy with but I’m considering changing to an LG C3 OLED TV.
I know this has been discussed many times whether to go for a TV or monitor but I still can’t come to a consultation as there’s pros and cons to both.
Obviously with a TV I will be loosing that extra FOV I get with the Ultrawide but im trying to make it more immersive. Also with the 4K I guess I will loose a few frames compared to the lower resolution of the Ultrawide.
Does anyone have any experience of changing to a TV? Is there anything I will regret if I do this?
If you were solely GPU bound in MSFS, you would potentially be looking at a 30-40% FPS reduction by going to 4K, as it is, MSFS is often CPU bound, so you should experience a smaller drop in frames, but it may be significant, depending on your CPU.
I use a 4K TV for MSFS and I wouldn’t consider it losing FOV, as the 4K resolution is actually wider, but also much taller. Pair it with head tracking and it works very well.
As long as the TV can run 60Hz or above, which it looks like the LG is 100Hz, you should be golden.

Field of view can either be measured horizontally or vertically, but it’s always relative. On one hand the ultrawide gives you more horizontal FoV, but it’s also true that it’s less vertically when compared to a 16:9 screen of the same width.
This is all purely a matter of physical size and proportion, resolution isn’t a factor.
However you also could compare them like this in which case the 21:9 image does have a wider horizontal FoV. This is why I described it as being relative, not definite.
Exactly. How much of the cockpit you see depends on how wide the screen is physically, which in turn determines how much you can zoom out and still see everything clearly. You’ll see much more both horizontally and vertically on a 42’ 16:9 than on a 32’’ 21:9.
Yes, you’re right, I wasn’t aware of how MSFS handles ultrawide monitors, however although ultrawide increases the FOV, it also increases the distortion, so I would be careful of that. I saw another thread where a user had a super ultrawide and the FOV distortion meant he could see the engines on a twin while looking forward!
So while you don’t have as wide a FOV at 16/9, it’s more natural.
The FOV adjustment is you playing with the mousewheel. If you zoom extremely back you have the exact same effect than in other games when you use extreme FOV settings. Won’t look pleasant however thats for sure. More like a negative fisheye. I don’t how it is with XPlane though, but I doubt they are able to solve the image distortion on the sides as this is simply a technical limitation. I would be interested in comparative screenshots
I think the FOV is now fixed in the sim where you can adjust the zoom in the options menu. I have adjusted mine and have zoomed in slightly to get a more realistic view. The default is set to 50 but in my opinion when using Ultrawide it’s too stretched.
I’ve still got the Alienware Ultrawide although I haven’t had much time lately in the sim since posting my original post. I’m still debating an LG TV but it’s difficult as the Alienware is a great monitor and is good for productivity. I think I’ll stick with the Alienware
