Those pesky Spaniards, they always need to be special. Even their lightning occurs in a practically clear sky. (departing LEIB, direction Menorca) To be fair, though, after the last hotfix, the live weather performs very well, just the lightning can be unbelievably bothersome.
Flying in the Central AR region, west of KLIT. Submitted to the Zendesk with location information. Wouldn’t irk me so much if I could set it to a non-live weather preset without it feeling stagnant and un-dynamic. I appreciate that Live Weather is dynamic and changing, but the lightning is just ridiculous.
It is concerning that this appears to have been going on since launch.
I’m also displeased to learn that the atmospheric model may not measure humidity, which would make it completely dysfunctional.
We should be able to manually choose to disable lightning in stormy weather.
The constant lightning was not a problem at launch. In fact, the Alpha and initial release version had almost no lightning at all - even where where it should exist. There were a lot of complaints about this, and lighting was introduced (as I recall) with the second sim update. Once added, it was immediately noted to be excessive and overdone, and has been that way ever since.
The MeteoBlue model undoubtedly contains parameters for dewpoint, and humidity - it would have to in order to create clouds, and to determine the altitudes of the cloud bases and tops. What is missing (in the available sim variables relating to weather) is a variable for dewpoint. This is nothing new - there was no dewpoint simvar in FSX and there is none in P3D.
In other words, while dewpoint would have to be “there” in the weather model for it to work at all, there is no current way to extract that value from the model in a variable accessible via standard SDK techniques, and (apparently) no way to set dewpoint from an external source, such as a surface METAR report.
Decided to finally reinstall MSFS after going back to P3d because of this. I see nothing has changed. Reality is pic1 (I live near KMKE airport) In sim pic 2 lol just garbage. Asobo needs to get their S%&3 together
Must not make a joke about that airport designation … must NOT make a joke about that airport designation. Grow up, Jiggy! Grow up!
Today I started the sim for the first time after a few weeks of break.
It took 2 seconds before I heard the first lightning. In that moment almost puked at my monitor to be honest.
The only explanation I have is that most people have presets enabled or just dont care. It is simply ridiculous to withness a failure of bug awareness on this astronomic scale.
Thanks HalberQuacky, that makes complete sense. I don’t have MSFS Installed due to hardware limitations, so I continue to observe from a distance.
I suppose then that MSFS has no model itself, but relies on the injection of data from MeteoBlue, which is sensible. I understand that dewpoint is perhaps unavailable as a simvariable due to legacy code from FSX. I also imagine that access to MeteoBlue data (such as dewpoint etc.) as a simvariable may be limited by commercial agreements between MS/Asobo and MeteoBlue.
I had hoped that having passionate meteorological professionals on board would mean that the weather ‘system’ in MSFS would be unsurpassed in fidelity. However this was naiive as MeteoBlue likely only provide raw data and have very little input as to its implementation.
Given Asobo’s lack of desire to allow third party access to the weather data and implementation (likely due to aforementioned agreements), we can only hope that they posses the desire and ability to improve it in the future.
Once again: reality:
In Sim:
Location KMKE 8/25/21 1911z
Do I need to post these comparisons everyday for someone with Asoba to acknowledge this incredibly ridiculous bug needs to be fixed asap?
They acknowleged it and it’s in the “pipeline.” Currently under investigation by the devs.
sorry but “not started” isn’t good enough for something so blatantly wrong
Don’t worry, summer is almost over… most of us won’t see lightning for a long time now, lol. Plenty of time to make it right.
Right, in the northern hemisphere it will be over soon. But try to fly in tropical regions, there you have these crazy lightnings all year (I like flying in Nepal, Papua)…
Asobo, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE fix this sooner than later… or give us an option to disable these immersion-killing lightnings and thunders. I would also be happy with a mod that can be installed separately…
I stopped using live weather at all because of that, but this takes away a big part of the experience
Ever hear of ‘Thundersnow’ ![]()
On a (sadly) serious side, it might be marketed as a ‘new feature’ ![]()
Still that’s better than nothing.
I love winter storms. In Czech Republic they aren’t that rare, always accompanied by cold fronts from the NW.
On serious note, I doubt the sim can simulate those. I’ve tried last winter in Germany, there even was +TSSN in the Metar, but nothing happened in the sim
We’ve had them a few times over my many years here the US Midwest. They are cool (literally, lol)
Here’s a potential fix. There’s a hidden “supercell” preset that draws a really nice thunderstorm cell.
Anytime the sim thinks there should be lightning, it should also be drawing these.
