Long Haul - Excited!

Hi fellow simmers,

I am almost done with my first long haul flight - from EGKK to KJFK. Quite a little “hop” across the “pond”.

Will I make it? Please see screenshot.

Oh that shouldnt be a problem.

as for me, well having had a rush of blood to the head this morning, I decided to try and get from EINN (Shannon) to CYYT StJohns in a fully fueled CJ4… Its going almost to plan…almost:

Which is great but I have Live weather on so am experiencing the very large low pressure system over the north atlantic…only a 146kt headwind…nothing to worry about…

Stop press: Headwind is now at about 152kts…

Ok, Now on 65% fuel, still battling the headwind, really havent got a chance of doing a Transatlantic today so will probably turn back to Shannon or head for whatever diversion airport I can get to…hmmm, wonder if I can get to Kefalvik from here (about 500NM west of Ireland)?

anyway, at least its sunny and I can see the sea (that I’m probably going to be swimming in if I dont turn around soon)

Yup, your routing was probably not the best.

I’m starting to realise that…

… At least they have finally fixed the hole in the CJ fuel tank :joy:

They certainly have sorted the fuel tanks and fuel burn…well decided that its best to head back to Shannon for a cheeky Guiness and I’m now finding out how fast the CJ4 can go with a 130kt tailwind… :sunglasses:

…currently about Mach 0.78/523kts ground speed, back in Shannnon in about an hour…yup should have gone west to east instead today

Well, keep us updated anyway, sure you’ll be fine, A320 Neos glide well so I’m told :grinning:

Well, I dont know how RarefiedDrop499 did but after a 3hr 20min round trip I’m back in Shannon (and no, I didint know that Frontier Airways flew there either…):

Lovely late December Irish weather…horrible low vis near Cat1 (now where’s the runway???) landing too but back on the ground having done my longest flight to date but I didnt really succeed in getting anywhere. On the plus side the recent update to the stock CJ4 means its waaaaay better than it was and finally has some proper long distance abilities (albeit not when I’m flying it), ah well, think I’ll go via Keflavik and Greenland next time

Guy7001,

Thank you for the wonderful diary of events on your long haul.

I feel even more connected to the community now.

No problem (apologies for the thread hijack…)

Anyway, how did you get on? did you end up flying on vapours during the final approach into JFK?

Hi Guy,

Actually, I’m almost at the same place. I went to bed, then just woke up. Thank God the computer and sim are still going!

I hit ESCAPE, pausing the sim before going down. I am pleased to see that Self-Loading Cargo paused to, and that the ETA countdown is still going.

The time in FS has continued to move, though, as it’s now about 13:00 UTC; thus I can now see the glow of the morning light to the East.

One of the “tricks” I used to pull this long pause off is keeping YouTube running in the background, which ensured that my computer didn’t go to sleep.

hmmm, that’s weird…Just looking at that ( and I’m not familiar with the FBW A320 but I do know its still a work in progress) it looks like the fuel prediction for KBOS includes another leg or possibly involves heading to (or towards) KJFK and then turning back…have a look at the UTC predictions for the two airports where its saying that the flight to KBOS is longer duration so its probably not a direct run…possibly the reason would be buried somewhere in the flight plan menu?
Well, either that or the Airbus needs the dual concepts of democracy and the space/time continuum explained to it
