Brief description of the issue:

I believe the photometry should be a bit better in the area I see lots of these terrain spikes outside of LA. The attached screenshot is East of downtown.

Detailed steps to reproduce the issue encountered:

It doesn’t matter what setting I choose for LOD or TOD I still see these spikes all over the LA area. I have 350 Mbit down and 50 mbit up tested, 22 ping to the MSFS auto server, and no packet loss. Tried toggling general settings from low to ultra. Cleared Cache but usually run with it off. Use addon linker and removed all mods I could. Tried removing Photometry cities for US but that didn’t seem to fix it.

I don’t see this in other areas and turning Photometry off fixes it. Do other people see this or does it seem to be my setup?

Those aren’t terrain spikes. The Photogrammetry interpreted the very tall “Washingtonia Robusta” palms as distinct objects (look closely at one of them). It’s the limitation of the technology that captured the images, not the sim.

Ok, so you see the same. Sometimes I mess with this Sim so much I can’t tell if I messed something up or it’s wrong for all. I didn’t notice this until recently I guess I just didn’t look?

I started to flatten some of the worst areas in the SDK I guess that’s my best bet and make a small mod. Not too hard but time consuming.

it does the same thing with cars. fly low over 42nd street in NYC and theres blobs on the street that look strangely like cars

And the big trees that line the streets do something similar. they’re god awful ugly but when you realize they’re trees and cars it’s not so bad

Yep, it’s just an indication that the environment-mapping technology – AFAIK the 3D mesh is made by comparing differences between multiple sequentially-captured high-res aerial photos – has difficulty with shapes that are narrower at the base or which contain concavities on their sides. Same exact problem as the bridges that can’t be flown under, too. It’d be nice to see Asobo et al’s algorithms evolve to detect these palm trees and replace them with sim objects instead, just as is already done for buildings and other kinds of trees. I’m sure we’ll get there some day!

Moved to World as this isn’t a sim defect.

Oh my there’s a lot of these I realize as I really look around - it’ll take me forever to fix all of them lol! Some of the sim defects ‘blend’ better then others, these stand out badly as the spacing along the roads make them look very artificial.

They demoed some of the details of the new terrain mapping techniques for 2024 and that should include a lot of foliage detection tricks. As you all said fingers crossed for the future!
