Love the sim, but hate that I CTD > 50% of flights with ucrtbase.dll error

Been involved with flight simming > 3 decades, though probably hadn’t touched it in the last dozen or so years. I am learning how to “fly” again, use a simple autopilot, and explore the gorgeous scenery.

After the latest patch, I get very few stutters and 25-35 fps generally with a slightly above midrange computer.

The downside, and it’s a biggie, is the fact that I CTD > 50% of the time. It’s usually in mid-flight, often not during any control input or onscreen message. Occasionally, it will happen during the transition from main menu to flight. I’ve even left the sim running overnight with a plane on the runway ready to take off. With no human intervention, the sim will CTD a few hours later.

All errors per Event Viewer show ucrtbase.dll as the faulting module. This is a VC++ file, and I have uninstalled/reinstalled the VC++ Redistributable multiple times, along with trying perhaps 3-4 dozen suggested individual fixes both from Zendesk and on these forums with no luck. I’ve deleted and reinstalled the sim, done Windows file integrity checks. I will stop short at reinstalling Windows, as this computer is my “daily driver”.

Any “needle in a haystack” suggestions appreciated!

@LarrySinNJ A reinstall may be your only option. It is likely that file is not registered properly or something similar. Windows SFC is good for some files, not so much for others.

Keep in mind though since Windows 8 you can do a full reinstall of windows without having to do the old wipe the drive, lose everything and start over. This is still an option but not necessary with Windows 10. This is not the refresh or reset within system i am talking about but a fresh, new install of Windows system.

Simply dl the Media creation tool, when it asks load the setup files to a USB disk and then run the setup from within windows. Choose the option to keep existing files.

It will then install a brand new install of windows without having to reinstall everything else.

This will work for 90% of the windows file issues. I did it just 3 days ago as I had some unrepairable system files that were causing crashes. Runs like a dream now.

I think a reinstall of Windows would be a bit drastic. I’m having the same problem with CTDs. Looking at other threads, it looks like the SmartCam is involved somewhere along the line (weird camera behaviour just before the CTDs), so software, not OS.

CTD 1 hour into the flight after the patch every time.

So I am the OP on this thread. I’m happy to admit that I haven’t had a CTD resulting from Ucrtbase.dll since the arrival of the 1.9.3.0 patch.

I have had CTDs with the faulting module being RenoirCore.WindowsDesktop.dll - a FS2020 file (as opposed to the above which is a Windows file), as a result of bringing up the VFR map. This is a known issue, which I imagine will be addressed in the next patch. For now, I just have the VFR map set to open upon flight, and I keep it minimized when I don’t need it.

Happy camper…for now…
