It’s generally not a bad idea to set the limit of your graphics card to the max refresh rate of your monitor (just as an upper limit). Rendering more frames makes no sense.
Doing so is safe (it’s very basic driver functionality) and will apply to all games if you set it as global settings.
Strange thing is, when I set the limit in NVidia control panel only, no effect… driver I have now is 471.11
(maybe this behaviour is different for various driver versions ?)
The changes in the nvidia control panel have only effect after restart of the application (MSFS).
Again, can’t confirm. With the NVidia setting and after restart of MSFS, I get the same result… it does not work at all, the only setting that works for me is Settings/General settings in MSFS.
Maybe vsync overrides this in order to render every second refresh, I have no idea.
But we’re getting off topic. With vsync you have no issues with the menu framerate. And without vsync you should limit it in the driver, as long as there is no fix for the sim.
Absolutely… we agree on that one.
as v-sync is broken, but you can use fps limiter without any problems, for this open any overlay with fps, found what you got in the cockpit and lock fps in nvinspector or nvcontrolpanel or somewhere in amd or i guess wherever you want, example i have 55-60 cockpit - 80-90 looking up to the sky, so i lock fps to 50 if you have in cockpit 70 i guess best way lock to 60-70… with this situation you will prevent any jumping fps than stop some stutters or and lags, you don’t need more than you got in cockpit… if you prefer outside view then look what you got in outside and force limite about that value
after change settings in nvcpanel you have to restart simulator for settings start works
p.s. must be you have some unusual videocard, or simulator use even another, because in my case everything work, you can use nvinspector and use different settings for this
Ok, several persons now confirmed frame limiter don’t work anymore through NCP. I didn’t tried recently, still have my 100 limitation for security reason, useless now with MSFS. That’s sad. How they can have broken this? I thought it was at drivers level and not breakable from an app…
I was wondering why the fan in my normally quiet PC was running so fast and then I looked at the CPU usage. Never had this problem before…
I have the latest Nvidia driver and the latest version of the sim and limiting my maxframerate in the nvidia ctrl panel and setting vsync on in there also limits my framerate perfectly.
I set it to 30 and I get 30, downloading with the menu in the background my gpu is at about 55 C
I really can’t see why this is a problem
I just take the focus off of it … Think it’s probably the Nvidia driver version that matters. That and I limit background fps to 20 in Nvidia control panel and I don’t think it’s a problem with AMD
It was OK for me to limit the frame rate in the NVIDIA driver, with 60 fps there the gpu remains at 50% while in the nenu. I am still wondering what the gpu is doing
but it is better now till it is patched and I hope it does not have any side effect. Thanks
If this is not a problem to you, please do not try to “solve” the issue as we know we can do that, and you’re not helping at all. Not everyone uses the sim in a window and i don’t want to keep unfocusing the simulator everytime it decides to go to 500fps mode while doing nothing at all.
It IS and issue and should be looked into.
I don’t use the sim in a window, it sets that automatically when downloading and it’s not as if you can play it until it’s finished. There is also the Windows key.
As far as menu’s go, I don’t spend 5 hours in them!
same, 2080ti use more than half at 50fps lol i don’t remember exactly how much but indeed more than 50%
The background is a rendered 3D scene (hangar view of the selected aircraft) and the GPU renders as many frames as it’s able to (or limited to).
With the CPU not being the limiting factor, the GPU is used as much as possible.
note:
not mix “background fps” - the game window is in background ( e.g. while downloading ) - and the fps in main-menue.
My 2080ti is not able to reach my normal vsync target of 75fps in 3840x1600 in main menu of the game in full gpu load. I use since a while a vsync fps limit to 37.5, but my card runs in more than 50% load only for that useless rendering of the hangar ( 50% of a 2080TI is 230Watt )
For the missing in-game FPS-cap there is a simple workaround: users can just cap with e.g. nvidia controll panel ( there are two settings : fps cap and background fps cap ). Its the same as in other games.
But the “issue” which is in meanwhile hidden within this Wish here is the gpu load which is caused in main menue ( and you know that many users run already into overheating in main menue
).
This high gpu load will not fixed for all users with a fps cap. The game must just stop to render a real-time background image.
5 hours = 5 mins a week over the year.
I think that’s an underestimate for somebody like you who is “solving” issues on Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums.
It’s a bug that no other game I have suffers from. Many games now (Call of Duty) have a setting for Menu FPS limit.
