Main thread loads up more and more and doesn't recover

Something tells me you won’t have much longer to wait. I would expect a week or two before SU4 is released.

But isn’t SU4 the result of the beta that I’ve found still contains the issue?
edit - forgive me, i am a bit new and am suffering unending issues with the game.
I run the steam version and the beta i tried was by selecting this option in steam…

The issue regarding this bug-logged report of the MT growing over time and from accessing the Controls menu, has been resolved in SU4 Beta. This has been confirmed. If you participated in the SU4 Beta, and you’re still having the issue, it is most likely caused by something else. You’ll have to wait and see once SU4 its released.

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

In MSFS 2024, the simulator produces a very strong network spike every ~15 seconds, especially during flight when streaming Aerial Imagery, Live Traffic, or Live Weather. Each spike leads to noticeable stutters and frame drops, making the gameplay feel unstable.

Additionally, any streamed data download inside the sim consistently triggers stutters, indicating that the current streaming-heavy design is creating performance bottlenecks.

I also observed that VRAM quickly fills to maximum and never frees up during the flight, remaining fully saturated until completely exiting the session. This shows a need for stronger VRAM cleanup and memory management.
I verified this behavior in Beta 4 as well.

Importantly, this issue occurs even though my internet connection is 200 Mbps, which confirms that it is not caused by a slow connection.
However, the problem is much worse on Wi-Fi than Ethernet, with Wi-Fi causing stronger and more frequent spikes.

A temporary workaround is limiting the Bandwidth Limit to the lowest possible value, which reduces—but does not fix—the issue.


FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

  • Occurs continuously every ~15 seconds.

  • Happens when streaming Aerial Imagery, Live Weather, or Live Traffic.

  • VRAM stays fully saturated for the entire flight.

  • Issue persists even with a 200 Mbps internet speed.

  • Stronger and more noticeable on Wi-Fi than Ethernet.


REPRODUCTION STEPS

  1. Launch MSFS 2024.

  2. Start a flight with one or more streaming features enabled:

    • Aerial Imagery

    • Live Traffic

    • Live Weather

  3. Monitor network usage via Task Manager.

  4. Observe network spikes every ~15 seconds.

  5. Notice the stutters and frame drops associated with each spike.

  6. Observe VRAM usage:

    • Fills to maximum and remains full until exiting flight.
  7. Note that the issue happens even with 200 Mbps internet, and becomes worse on Wi-Fi.

  8. Setting Bandwidth Limit to minimum reduces (but doesn’t solve) the issue.

REQUEST / SUGGESTION

I strongly recommend implementing:

  • A full Offline Mode.

  • Local Region Installation, allowing users to install specific flight areas locally.

  • More robust VRAM management and cleanup during flight.

  • A “fly-area-only” data mode to reduce dependency on global streaming.

  • Improvements to Aerial Imagery, Live Traffic, and Live Weather streaming to avoid 15-second spikes.

  • Network optimizations to reduce stutters, especially for Wi-Fi users.

I have the same issue, stuttering increase during flight and sometimes I have CTD just before landing. I believe it is because of stuttering. I also noticed going to the menu or controls menu from the bar have a big impact. I fly mainly Fenix.

Do those network spikes coincide with CPU spikes? I’ve sometimes observed the same as you but with CPU, never thought to look at network in parallel (kind of difficult in VR too).

I’ve just finished flight EDDW - EDDK. I din’t switch the camera out of cockpit and also I didn’t switch between the windows. All flight was fluent, no stuttering, even during landing. I think it might be a MSFS2024 software problem. It eats somehow VRAM and CPU more and more when switching windows, camera or going to the menu.

I have been experiencing this problem for a long time now.. Anyone know if there is any fix?

Today I disabled seated passengers in GSX. I did a flight with GSX but no passengers visible. It was fantastic, no stuttering. I could switch cameras between cockpit and cabin as much as I wanted to. Very fluent. Maybe I was lucky, maybe it really helped. I will try to do more flights.

Worth to mention that before that I was flying with seated passengers, but the cockpit doors closed in Fenix. That means no passengers were visible unless cockpit door opened.

So, the SU4 is out. Did it fix the issue for everyone?

I doubt it. Writing and reading from files is significantly slower than RAM.

My swap file is fixed at 2GB I think. I have 32GB RAM and never run out of memory.

Swap files were invented in the 90s when RAM was small and expensive. The slowest thing on Win95 was often the hard disk.

Buy as much RAM as possible, wean off swap files, shutdown non essential apps.

Good suggestions.

However, my mantra is avoid WiFi. Slow response times, lost packets.

My entire house is wired, apart from phones and Alexa. Virgin router with 1G network, cable to 100 Mb tv, cable to Netgear unmanaged 1G switch, which feeds PC with 1GB PCI card.

The Negear switch has a small buffer to prevent IP packet loss, which avoids extra server calls and routes packets efficiently. When Netflix buffered on our older tv with 10MB interface, the Netgear switch eliminated 99% of buffering incidents.
