Make Cloud Streaming Optional -MSFS 2024

The most requested yet the most outlooked. Or simply this is not aligned with MSFS roadmap.

It would certainly help the load times on Xbox if we weren’t streaming absolutely everything

I personally have no intention of returning to 2024 until this has been addressed

2024 streaming

2020 on HDD

I certainly know which one loads better

I don’t know if it’s a LOD thing with ground vs assets for quality but also in 2020 I have most my traffic settings right down to increase fps
Also the weights thing in the efb but that’s for another area on this forum

Most us Xbox simmers have maybe 2 3 games on our Xbox leaving massive amounts of room on our HDD lots of us are running rolling caches over 100gb to try alleviate the issues we are having compared to 2020

Some extra things I’d like to know coz I know we won’t be able to install everything it’s way too big but is it at all possible to get the world mesh as a HDD asset to help load even with a basic photogrammetry package over it so while it’s loading higher detail in we have a baseline good no matter what
Making the planes HDD based assets would also alleviate bandwidth problems to a degree

Extra note to this I’m on Xbox so I can’t change any settings for visuals this is what we get given nothing we can do to change anything

2020 did give us a traffic and fauna option area which helped reduce close assets for LOD
2024 has nothing like this so any plane at a parking spot etc is having to load in taking more of the available memory which for a flying Sim should be more on the scenery so flying makes sense

2024 over a runway at 5kft

2020 at over 10kft

The difference is crazy between the 2 at 5kft in 2024 looks worse to me than 2020 at over 10kft

Due to my low bandwidth internet connection I’d like to download content per region (i.e. Europe) to my NVMe drive so that no streaming of data happens during flight.
Also downloading the preffered aircraft I’m flying most of the time would be better instead of streaming all data/textures etc of the plane on every flight.

So I voted for this to be implemented in future updates.

Thanks!

Any news on when Manual Caching gets implemented?

My Personal Comment & Observation

@Fanki17
It is still under investigation, as per the April 10 Blog:

so IMO I’d not expect to see this until SU3 (no release date at this time) at the earliest.

That’s just not realistic, and it wouldn’t make much sense for MS/Asobo to let users do that.

I remember back when I used X-Plane 11 — the only way to get satellite imagery for ground textures was to manually download the areas you wanted. Streaming wasn’t even an option. A process refered to as Orthoscenery (which can be streamed now apparently). I did it just for France, which is, let’s be honest, a relatively small country.

Even then, to get textures that looked decent as low as around 10,000 feet, anything below that was noticeably much lower quality compared to what MSFS gives you out of the box. And just that setup took up about 350GB of storage — and that’s with a fast internet connection. If I wanted to get MSFS-level of detail, we’d be looking at over a terabyte just for that same region, if not more (it grows exponentially for low altitude textures res).

Good luck downloading that with a slow connection. Plus, if even a small chunk of the user base tried doing that, it would put a serious strain on the servers and jeopardize bandwith for others throughout your downloading process, a process which is going to be VERY long indeed).

Bottom line: it’s not going to happen — just like it never did with FS2020.

Same here, in MSFS2020 you could do that, just download a part of the map, please please Microsoft make that happen, it will improve your server load in the long term and make for a better experience!

yeah but last I remember, the scope was very limited. You couldn’t download an entire small country all the way down to the highest textures LOD (low altitude when it’s the worst data wise)

That’s not necessary.
In MSFS2020 the scenery (Bing) data is also streamed and that creates no problems. The problem is that everything is streamed in MSFS2024.

It’s amazing how many don’t release the world has been streaming in both games the whole time only difference is planes and airports were on our hard drives with 2020 vs streamed in

Personally we need to option to be able to do 2020 things again so planes airports etc and some of the world updates (like the fact we can stream the not common flying places and still have the better pg etc)

I can’t believe how often I still see cockpits loading in. Immersion killer par excellence. Let us download stuff please!

There is much more then only the aircraft and airports.

I have almost 550 GB of data from MSFS2020 on my harddisk compare that with the125 GB of data from MSFS2024 i have now.

All the World update packages from within MSFS2020 are also been streamed in MSFS2024.

Not really, open up one of the world updates and you will find they are the added poi some photogrammetry which is the smallest part of the update and then the handcrafted airports they have made plus bush flights discovery flights etc

One of my add-ons I have to go into the world update for Nz to remove certain things so often have them fully opened up to see the break down of what’s there

I’m not sure it’s just that. Back in 2020, the DEM 3D terrain meshes (basically the detailed elevation data where the textures go) were also stored locally. That’s a ton of data when you’re dealing with high-res terrain, and it definitely adds some strain when comparing 2024 to 2020.

That’s also why you could fly offline in 2020 — it already had the meshes ready to go, and if it couldn’t grab satellite imagery, it would fall back to those ugly, generic offline textures (you know the ones ).

But since 2024 doesn’t even seem to store terrain meshes locally, anyone hoping for a proper offline mode might be in for a long wait
I really don’t see MS/Asobo rolling back on the whole cloud-first approach to such a huge degree

Didnt even think about the terrain meshs completely forgot but I don’t care if we cant download the finer detail but will add the mesh into with planes and airports as downloaded stuff would make it work so much better

I agree with you, I still think that “almost 100% cloud” approach was, is, and will be a mess even in the long run.
I sure understand though that FS2020 rapidly became too much to store for a lot of people, and especially for Xbox people save for the hardcore sim crowd

I’m an Xbox user myself am waiting till we can do this what we are talking about here have over 500gb free to use for add-ons and meshs etc, most the Xbox people that are here on the forum will be much the same maybe have 1 or 2 other games on the console but flight sim is the main thing

Myself do a bit of sim racing but the install time to swap them is negligible so have my main muck round one installed and swap out others same with the shooters

Space is a premium yes but can get more for not terribly much as well again all things anyone serious about flight sim will happily pay for if it means better experiences
