Mandatory update exceeds disk space

I mean i sit at around 300gb for my entire MSFS folder (base + Prem Deluxe + community). What eats up the storage space is the World Updates. Those are absolutely optional thankfully. The amount of space that prem deluxe exclusively takes up is peanuts compared to the rest of the game, some peoples community folders and 14 world updates worth of content

if you ask me the rule of thumb for MSFS, any version: 1tb dedicated SSD or NVME. my 300gb also includes both US World Updates and the Canada update (even though i never fly up there). No reason to have the other 11 updates loaded since i hardly fly in those places.

I have a genuine question though: Why would you want to play an outdated version of MSFS even if “just because i wanna play it?” Current issues aside theres a TON of things that have been fixed in those 3 years and who knows how many addons work properly if not on a current version.

If I have to choose between an 3 years old outdated, but functional version and no play at all, then I would choose the first. They could just make the new features and add-ons optional and important fixes/bugs/security mandatory.

The ridiculous part of that is that the most space is taken by aircraft and liveries I and probably many others never use and we get rid of anyway after the update. But it gets downloaded and requires space and time. Would be much more convenient if “updates” wouldn’t include new aircraft and stuff but only UPDATES. I can download that additional content myself if I have the desire to. :man_shrugging:

Yeah I think when MS2024 comes round, I’ll check how the new base structure of the sim is. They seem to be pretty confident they can make it a lot smaller, using the streaming technology.

Otherwise, I’ll just swap the 500GB with the 2TB and replace the 2 with a 4TB and be done with it. D is actually my Steam gaming drive and some backups. But I suppose I only got some 6 other games installed anyway. Simming being the core business, as it should.

Ok… just an update from my simple life.

I prepped my Samsung T7 with a 400 gb NTFS partition and asked the MS store to install on that. It ran and installed a very small something. Then when launching flight simulator it started running the update. Apparently to the external SSD. So I don’t have a 10 Gbit internet connection so after some hours it had downloaded and installed around 30 gb. No progress bar. Just the music and a splash screen. I went to bed for the night.

Next morning FS had closed it self. Tried to open it again and it suggested safe mode. Asked for normal and now it wanted to do another big update. This time it refused to install on the external drive, saying it could not take the root folder even though it happily did so the night before and instead suggested a folder on C drive.

Curious what awaits when I come home. But honestly I think it should be fetching areas you pick your self and a few default locations instead of literally downloading the whole world.

Maybe in a week or two I can take a flight?

Ok… got the game up and running. Somehow partly on the external drive. Thanks to all of you even though I can only mark one post as solution
