Massive LOD changes visible on ground when flying over photogrammetry areas

Here’s another picture zoomed in from msfs2020:

It’s clear to see the buildings and trees have much better form here than in my previous pic (2024)

Hi Nixie. From the posts in here, I think there’s a couple of different issues that people are talking about. I just want to make sure the issue you describe in the original post is the issue that I am also seeing. What I am seeing is tiles/layers of the photogrammetry terrain/city using low quality bing maps layers that are inconsistently transitioning from the bing layer to higher quality photogrammetry layer at a specific distance from the camera around the plane. When I go to external, its way more obvious and is much worse if you pan around the plane to areas of terrain that were behind the camera and then only start to load in when they are in focus. Is that the issue you are having?

This is what you see with photogrammetry off, the buidings in this picture it look to much generic.

With photogrammetry on you should see something like this the city of Rotterdam
This is taken on pc with Tlod set to 800 with no dynamic set during su3 beta

But try to disable photogrammetry on the xbox and see the difference with your pictures to compare.

I see this on my system to, when i’m flying over Paris like it keeps on (re) rendering, like a moving forward periferic or sphere
But i think it has to do with beta4 test settings to find balance and rather Olod than Tlod.

Yea if it’s the melted buildings that just how it is with photogrammetry in many parts of the world in this sim unfortunately

This is what I am specifically taking about. Where the Photogrammetry terrain tiles are not streaming in correctly most noticeable when panning the camera quickly around the plane. If this is an issue that anyone else is experiencing, after messing around with settings on the PC version last night I basically resolved this. It seems slightly tied to TLOD (Terrain Level of Detail) and you really need to make sure that this is set to at the very minimum 200. The higher the better though. The setting that seems completely tied to this is just under the TLOD setting and is called “Off-Screen Terrain Pre-Caching”. It makes complete sense now why panning the camera around the plane can highlight this issue if terrain that is “off-camera” is not being effectively pre-cached. At minimum this setting needs to be set to “High” if you want an experience more in line with 2020.

Sadly, I am most of the time an Xbox user and we do not have access to the “Off Screen Terrain Pre-Caching”. I imagine on Xbox this is set to medium or possibly low. But needs to be increased to High if possible.

Hi all,

Reading through the comments above, it seems this reported issue may not be specifically exclusive to Sim Update 4 Beta. If this is to be the case, can I ask for users to please search to see if there are threads in the Bug Reporting Hub for the live SU3 build, where reports may be placed.

Thanks
The MSFS Team

The original post describing my issue with the decreased LOD ranges definitely started with SU4.

It is not that the PG does pop up constantly, they never pop up also. The scenery looks awful

Thank you for the bug report.

We have created an internal ticket to see if our team already has this logged, and if not they will attempt to reproduce the issue and create a new bug report. This item is now marked as feedback-logged. If there is an existing bug report or one is created, we will move this thread to bug-logged.

This was a flight from KPHX to KLAS, Inibuilds a330. SU4 latest version, left SU4 preview and no problems.

I was tempted to go back to the beta to see if the terrain issue / melted PG / blurry runways was fixed- since the last release notes mentioned something about terrain performance? I guess things have gotten worse? Yeesh! This game just continues to be so unstable even with great hardware. Sure the beta can be unstable, but I’m having issues with blurry runways and weather data in the release version. We all paid full price for a beta and continue to buy products that sometimes work and sometimes don’t as things are constantly changing with no real stability in sight.

The desert in the SW US has had issues since prior to 2024. Let’s remember that the areas you can see from altitude in essentially desert areas are hundreds of miles with no trees to cover up seams between tiles. I think the blame here rests on aerial mapping primarily. They do a great job on the areas surrounding cities but there is little financial incentive for high resolution photogrammetry to be available for free of largely uninhabited areas. My guess is that those same issues exist to an extent over largely green areas of the world but the trees and bushes that are automatically generated hide much of the mismatches. When the whole world is beige and brown, slight color differences in adjacent tiles are much more obvious.

Guys!

At EDDL, blurry runway everytime when landing. When photogrammetry is on, its blurry. But when its off it is sharp again

This means MSFS2024 is not loading photogrammetry correctly and it affects 3rd party addons like MKstudios EDDL!

I hope this gets the attention!

(on build 1.6.11.0)

I saw something today that may be related to this though I am not sure. It’s definitely a bug that I have not seen before or if I have experienced it, I didn’t notice:

Note the darker-colored tiles and the distinct line delineating them from the ligher-colored terrain to the south. As I watched from the drone camera, these darker areas extended and continued along in that straight line roughly east-to-west as I flew along. This was in the US desert southwest, along my route from KDEN to KLAX.

This has been reported previously in a couple of topics:

As a long ago scenery developer of the Phoenix area I can attest that the aerial photography of the SW deserts varies tremendously in color/brightness/etc depending on the area you are modeling and the problem with desert areas is that it is far more noticeable due to the lack of tree cover and the vast distances you can see. My guess is the basic Bing aerial data contains these discrepancies and the processing of trying to blend them together later would be resource intensive. Vast desert areas that are unpopulated and in the public domain are photographed by governments but nowhere near the detail and attention of the more populated areas. It costs money for that aerial photography and someone has to pay for it. The large barren areas just don’t have the financial driver in the highest quality of mapping.
