Saturday DC-6 Journey to the USA
Kuujjuaq → Goose Bay | The Journey Continues
Our Saturday DC-6 Journey to the USA continues this week as we leave the remote reaches of northern Quebec and point our noses southeast towards Labrador.
We’ll be taking our trusty Douglas DC-6 from Kuujjuaq to Goose Bay, continuing our journey across Canada and ever closer to the United States.
As always, while the DC-6 is the star of this particular adventure, other aircraft are very welcome. Bring whatever you enjoy flying and come along for the ride!

THE DC-6 JOURNEY CONTINUES
There’s something special about crossing long distances in a classic piston airliner.
No glass cockpit doing everything for you. No high-bypass turbofans quietly pushing you along at Mach 0.8.
Instead, we’ve got four big radial engines, propellers, analogue gauges and an aircraft that rewards a little attention from its crew.
Our journey towards the USA has already taken us through some spectacular country, and this Saturday we’re continuing south from the shores of Ungava Bay towards Labrador.
Fire up those radials.
We’ve got another leg to fly.
DEPARTING KUUJJUAQ
Our starting point this week is Kuujjuaq, one of the northernmost communities in Quebec and the largest northern village in the Nunavik region.
Situated on the Koksoak River, not far from Ungava Bay, Kuujjuaq has long been an important transportation hub for northern Quebec.
Its location makes it exactly the sort of place where aviation isn’t simply convenient — it’s an essential connection between remote northern communities and the rest of Canada.
For us, however, Kuujjuaq represents something else.
It’s time to keep heading south.
At 1130 UTC, we’ll get the engines running, taxi out and send four Pratt & Whitney radials roaring into the northern Canadian sky.
SOUTH TOWARDS LABRADOR
Once airborne, we’ll leave Kuujjuaq behind and make our way southeast across the vast and sparsely populated landscape of northern Canada.
This is big country.
Lakes, rivers, forests, tundra and seemingly endless wilderness stretch out beneath us as we work our way towards Labrador.
With Live Time and Live Weather enabled, we’ll take whatever conditions Canada decides to throw at us.
Hopefully we’ll get some spectacular views along the way.
If not, that’s what the instruments are for!
DESTINATION: GOOSE BAY
Our destination is Goose Bay, located near the western end of Lake Melville in Labrador.
Goose Bay has a particularly rich aviation history.
The airfield was constructed during the Second World War and became an important staging and refuelling point for aircraft crossing the North Atlantic. Its strategic location and enormous amount of available space would continue to make Goose Bay significant long after the war ended.
During the Cold War it remained an important military aviation hub, and in later decades the huge training areas surrounding Goose Bay became well known to military aircrews from several NATO countries.
That makes it a particularly fitting destination for a classic aircraft like the DC-6.
After crossing the wilderness from Kuujjuaq, we’ll descend towards Goose Bay and bring another stage of our Journey to the USA to a close.
And we’ll be another leg closer to the border.
DON’T HAVE THE DC-6?
No problem!
The Douglas DC-6 is our suggested aircraft and the theme of these Saturday flights, but this is a group flight first and foremost.
If you don’t own the DC-6 — or simply fancy flying something different this week — bring another aircraft and join us.
Classic propliners, turboprops, freighters or something more modern are all welcome.
Just grab the flight plan, meet us at Kuujjuaq and come fly with the group.
JOIN THE FLIGHT
Get those radials warmed up and prepare for another journey across Canada’s spectacular north.
Departure is 1130 UTC this Saturday.
We’ll be flying in MSFS 2024 using Live Time, Live Weather and the Southeast Asia Server.
