Hi, I am getting massive stutters, the sim even stops for a couple of seconds around cambridgeshire (EGSC) England. I have this issue only in this place, does this happen to anybody else? My sim is silky smooth everywhere else in England. It doesn’t seem to happen on the runway but as I gain height and fly anywhere around cambridge? Could it be a bug with fs2020?
I’ve just flown EGSC around for about 10 minutes, with no stutters, and quite a nice fps (for my system)
So I don’t know why you’re having a problem.
I have had occasional big stutters elsewhere, but these have been quite random, rather than in a single location, so I’ve put it down to a hiccup on my internet connection.
Did you have any addon nearby?
some of the community addon didn’t do any optimization in terms of LOD and there’s one time my memory usage suddenly jumped from 23GB to 32GB and my FPS tanked from 30 to 10 even I couldn’t see the loaded scenery yet.
Thanks for testing this for me so quickly, I am glad you had no problem, the only addon I have is orbx london city, I will keep trying different things to get to the bottom of this and report back my findings. At least I now know it’s not a bug and it’s something with my system or settings
I can assure you its not your internet connection. Scenery/terrain loading need asap optimization. Its that main thread.
When the stutters start, hit the windows key on your keyboard. If the stutters miraculously stop while the windows taskbar is visible then your workaround is to go to taskmanager/details tab/flightsimulator.exe/right click and Set Priority to low.
There are problems with flight simulator where critical processes dont get enough time to do their job and can cause this stuttering. It was fixed in patch 2 but is back again in patch 3. Hope this helps. It’s the solution I have to use again right now to remove the stuttering.
I guess I tried all possible things but I’ll try this one as well…not much optimistic tbh…
I know the solution sounds like one of those placebo type fixes but there was a huge thread on Reddit with this fix back after patch 1. It seemed to have about an 80% success rate at that time with everyone surprised that it worked.
Then Patch 1.8.3 came along with the patch note titled - ’ * Tweaked CPU thread priorities to reduce interruption of frame critical threads.’
That solved the problem. Unfortunately a new variation of the same problem is back with 1.9.3 and the ‘low priority’ tweak is once again needed to solve the problem.
So I highly suggest that anyone who gets 2-3 second long stutters tries this fix because it really works. The stutters stop the moment you enable it if it’s the cause of your stutters.
Thanks for trying unfortunately its not it.
Do check one other thing. Make sure Windows Game Mode is off. This causes causes games to essentially enter High Priority mode which would likely prevent the ‘low priority’ tweak from working.
You can find it by searching windows (magnifying glass next to start button) for game mode.
I am just doing more testing in new areas rather then my usual area. I think its true. Some areas are simply bugged. How dense they are does not affect the stutters.
I just did a flight in a much denser area and those stutters are almost don’t exist.
Thanks ill try that too. However I do think that this all due to some bugs in spesific area as I wrote above.
Try flying over Los Angeles for a while; see if it hits you there too. I had the problem prior to 1.8.3, and the low priority tweak was a solution. Then 1.8.3 fixed it for me completely and there was no need to set low priority. 1.9.3 came along and I played for 45 mins with no problem until I flew over Los Angeles and then the mega stutters hit again. I thought it was just a glitch but after 4-5 mins the stutters hadn’t cleared. So I hit the windows key and bingo, the stutters are instantly gone. I return focus to the game and they are instantly back. Hit windows key, instantly gone. Rince and repeat.
The moment the game loses focus, and loses priority, the stutters fix. The low priority tweak is simply a way to mimic that behaviour. So now I simply always set low priority when starting the game and if I ever forget the game will remind me because I’ll hit stutters. I get zero stutters with low priority set though.
Here’s the original Reddit thread where you can see it solves the problem for lots of people: https://www.reddit.com/r/flightsim/comments/ifle4x/huge_performance_booststutter_reduction_by/
Take note the thread now starts by saying that the latest patch solved the problem, but that was referring to the 1.8.3 patch, not the new 1.9.3 where the bug came back.
Ok, I’ve realised if I take off from Cambridge (egsc) there are no big stutters, however if I fly from another airport from london area towards cambridge it happens about 10 miles out. The only way i could get it to stop is turn all online functionality off which is not something i would like to keep. I know it’s not my internet speed because I have 65mbps and it only happens at cambridge, I did try the process low priority trick but it didn’t help me but maybe game mode is on stopping this from working? I am away from my computer now so it will have to wait till tommorow to check game mode. I will report my findings, i will try los angeles too ! Cambridge is my home city so it would be nice to get it stutter free. thankyou all for all your help
Im just flying out of Marham back to Heathrow, and there are masses of AI and online flyers in that area right now…
LIke 2 queued up for take off, with one not bnothering with ATC, and the ATC made sure he knew it…
Could be traffic causing your stutters?
Possibly but I turned off all air traffic and it still happened? I have only experienced this flying towards cambridge and there has been alot of ai around London and it’s been fine flying around there
I just CTD, passing over the North Cricular, rejoined MSFSSand tried to join in the air, to be met with Server Offline in red letters across the screen… interesting
Okay, so I did a little testing for you.
I started at EGSW (Cambridge), flew around for a good 10 minutes, low level flying, over the city. No lag at all. I came back to tell you this and found your newer reply stating that you’d discovered that it didn’t happen unless you flew towards EGSW from somewhere else.
So I did a second test. Takeoff from EGWE (20 miles SW of EGSW) and flew towards EGSW. No lag until I got 5 miles out from Cambridge. Only minor at first but grew continuously worse over the next few minutes as I got closer to EGSW airport until I was getting lag stutters of up to a full second. This continued as I circled around. A completely different experience to when I took off directly from Cambridge.
I should point out that I never enabled the low priority tweak on either flight up to this point because I never get lag with it on. I then set flightsimulator.exe priority down to low while the lag was still happening. The stutters immediately reduced but continued for about 5 seconds (this is my experience while while the game catches up with successfully loading the area) and then the stutters were gone.
So it seems that the causes of lag for our two machines do match up. My fingers are crossed that the only reason the low priority fix didn’t work for you was that you have Game Mode enabled which would essentially override the tweak. Good luck, hope this helps you find your own solution.
Edit: Thinking back, I also experienced the worst lag on day 1 of the new patch as I started to see Los Angeles coming into view while flying towards it, and next to nothing when taking off from within Los Angeles on my next flight. That lag was far worse than I experienced at Cambridge. The lag was 2-3 second freezes at times arriving at LA. It lasted for a good 5 mins but also cleared up within a few seconds after I enabled low priority there too. So that is maybe an even better test for you.
Firstly thankyou for flying this route for me, unfortunately game mode wasn’t on and the low process trick didn’t work for me. I flew from luton (eggw) to cambridge (egsc) twice at 5000 feet and it happened again about 10 miles out both times. And it got really bad over the city, I done a touch and go and it was bad climbing out of the airport too. 1 to 2 second freezes. I have tyred everything I can think of to fix it. It’s a shame as this is a airport I like to fly into. Perhaps there is a bug in this area and asobo can fix it soon but I am sure they are very busy. One thing i did notice is that there is loads of trees at cambridge city, far more than looks realistic i think and more than i have seen at other citys in the sim, perhaps these start loading 10 miles out and are overloading the sim?. Anyway Thankyou again everybody, if someone finds a fix please let me know. Kind regards and happy simming
It could be your RAM topping out. This sim is known to go quite a bit over 16GB even though it’s the “recommended” amount.
What is your virtual memory set to?
