Also new headstrap with audio coming in the summer
Thanks for heads-up. I am not that much interested in audio as I run through my Logitech sound system here, but the head strap might be worth a look at if it enhances the comfort in any way.
What we need though is motion smoothing implementation to work properly and lower refresh rates @ 72 or 75Hrz for better frames and feel of flight smoothness. I think we might struggle a bit otherwise with the high headset resolution at 90Hrz. I will get a 5090 though regardless⦠when eventually available.
I think they mentioned on their discord that that is coming in aprilā¦iāll check to make sure
Looking good, thank you for the info above.
Now we need a working flying simulator!..and a 5090.
Day 1 in the MeganeX house.
- Installation and setup - It took a few hours fiddling with the headset and software to get going initially. The configurator software and steam VR are quite fussy together. There is also an error on start-up, āsteamvr has not detected graphics cardā. I start steam then configurator and then steam VR which works 50% of the time. If I get the error, I power everything down, including the headset and start again.
- MSFS 2024 performance. With 4080 and mostly medium settings with Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, I get the following FPS with DLSS preset K performance mode and 100% resolution 4084 x 4084. Scotland rural 34fps, carribean small islands 36fps and london city 30fps. All three environments are fairly smooth and constant with GPU at steady 95%. 3652 by 3652 at 80% not much noticeable difference visually, but only 2/3 fps increase. I shall wait for SU 2 FFR quad views for that fps boost and run the MeganeX at 100% resolution.
- Optics and display. The lenses are not as good as quest 3 with maybe 5% of the edge blurring but not noticeable when looking at those lovely colours. At first, I tried to get my eyes too close to the lenses, which created warping and other problems, dialling up the distance from the lenses, reduced the FOV, but gave me a stable image, I was happy with. The panels produce spectacular colours, and the turquoise seas of the Caribbean and london night city lighting are gorgeous.
- Sound. I attached some wired earbuds to my turtle beach velocity one joystick, and they worked a treat and also swap for my headphones at times. This will keep me happy until the audio strap comes along.
- Conclusions. My aim was to put all my eggs in a top headset basket and hope to get an acceptable performance from my 4080, so not going for a power hungry, bankrupting 5090. If shiftall delivers on the promised software updates Iām confident that running at 72hz with motion smoothing at 36 FPS will be decent enough. I havenāt found the holy grail headset, but I have found something, I am happy to sup from for the next three years.
Glad itās working out for you! Initial user reports seem very mixed and no one is as euphoric as all the youtubers seemed to be. But some HMDs do take time to get used to them.
Thankyou, I think this HMD especially takes time to get used to.
With no returns it certainly encourages people to persevere. Not sure if I will fully get used to the soft strap but so relieved I do not have a brick on my face any longer.
I hope the audio strap is similar to the BSB one and as successful
I had a HP Reverb G2 originally. I preordered the MeganeX on Oct 12th, the day preorders opened, and after a week in customs, the headset will come Monday.
I have purchased a base station. But I have no experience on how to set this up, how to link it to the headset, etc. With the HP Reverb G2, as long as you had Steam VR and Mixed Reality going, everything just worked.
So is there any installation recommendations? There arenāt any videos about setup for the device, anything on YouTube is all review or promoting the MeganeX, but nothing about actual setup.
You donāt actually need to ālinkā a basestation. Itās a bit counterintuitive. Basically, just set it up and plug it in and make sure the headset is not too close to it (at least 1.5 to 2m). After 10 seconds or so, the base station should show up in the little steamVR window. This means the headset is tracking itself using the base station beams. They donāt actually communicate with each other and the base station doesnāt communicate with the PC in any way.
The whole bluetooth thing only works with an Index.
But I believe the Meganex also comes with a printed manual, not sure how good it is though. As do the basestations but itās pretty sparse.
I hope all goes well for you on Monday.
I read the whole manual before I received the HMD, time well spent. You can find the online manual link on Shiftall main page at⦠MeganeX superlight 8K
Meganex has a new steam direct driver written by community member SBoys3 and available on Shiftall Discord. It uses the official distortion profile sanctioned by TK ceo of Shiftall.
Many users including myself have found an increase in performance and clarity using this driver plus the ability to now use steamvr motion smoothing.
My 4080 and DLSS 4 performance mode gives good performance.
Looking forward now to MSFS 2024 SU2 update, so chocks away for VR flights.
Any updates on the Megane X from those who have ordered it? Iām really curious to hear from Quest Pro owners as thatās what I currently have. How large an upgrade does it feel?
I switched from crystal light to Meganex 8K. I wonāt switch back for several reasons. Here are my thoughts on this, I start with the positives:
First: Iām Flying MSFS 2024 in the SU2 Beta.
- Lighthouse tracking vs. Inside-Out Tracking (espcially Pimaxā¦)
Lighthouse tracking is so much better and more stable than the IO-Tracking. In the Pimax there is always some issue with the tracking that breaks immersion. With two Lighthouse Base Stations from Valve I have no problems at all. Butter smooth tracking.
- Weight
200grams vs. 1000grams (with comfort strap and counterweights which are desperately needed). I can finally use VR in the sim for more than 30 minutes without my neck killing me. This might be a problem with my neck, others can easily bear the weight of the Crystal, but I canāt.
- Clarity
In the Pimax I had my prescreption lensen. They havenāt arrived yet for the Meganex. But what I can say is, that in the sweet spot the clarity of the Meganex is superb once you find your settings. Edge to edge clarity is a bit of a problem. Have to move my head, but with this thing being so light, this is no problem at all and this might be solved by the prescription lenses. At least thatās the consensus of everyone who needs them and already got them.
- Performance
Iām running a High-End-System with a 4090 and 9800x3d. The Meganex runs better (!) than the crystal. With some tinkering (get to that in the negatives) this thing runs butter smooth on my system with 45FPS locked via RTSS and no motion smoothing.
- Lensen and Optics
Contrast, Colors, those OLED Displays are such a joy. For the first time Iām enjoying flying at night in VR. Looking at this stars with the sky in deep black because of the OLED is just amazing. Jaw dropping. With something like the Dukes from Blacksquare with exceptionell cockpit lighting this is on another level compared to the crystal light local dimming. Albeit there is some chromatic aberation, itās not as bad as in the crystal. I got some new lensen from Pimax but they were actually worse than the first one. I couldnāt fly glass cockpit in the crystal without getting instantly annoyed with the chromatic aberation.
- binocular overlap
You donāt know that you want better binocular overlap unless you have seen it. Iām gladly missing out on FOV for this. Im cropping it anyways to get more performance.
Now to the negatives:
- Build quality
Coming with the formfactor and the ultralight design this thing feels like it can break in half if you look at it strange.
- Setup process
This is a pain. The ammount of fiddling that is needed to get it right is insane. To get this HMD working right you need to be experienced. I switched to another SteamVR Driver (simpleHMD) because the warping profile of the Shiftall driver is garbage and makes me sick. This way I am able to use OpenXR Toolkit with the FOV Mod to crop the FOV. But this is what I had to do with crystal too.
Whatās fiddly is the process of finding the right position on the head, because it needs to be spot on. What is even more fiddly, is finding the right diopter setting. Since there are no markings for the zero point, it is, even knowing my diopters, a very painfull process to get it right. Once I got it, it was great. But getting there made me second guess some life choices. Like spending a little fortune on the headset and the tracking.
In conclusion (your experience may differ): This is a niche product for enthusiasts that is great if you get it right. For getting it right you need experience, time and patience. The out of the box experience isnāt that great at the moment. Iām positive that it will gett better. Shiftall is committed to getting the software right.
p.s.: English isnāt my first language and this must be the longest post I ever made on this forum. But I hope I found the right words to describe my experience.
p.p.s.: If some of you are interested in my settings Iām happy to share them.
What a great post and after reading it, Iām even more impatient to receive my MeganeX
Iām supposed to have it delivered April-May. So hopefully not that much longer of a wait now
Thanks for such an extensive reply!
Another opinion from Reddit about this VR set.
https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualreality/comments/1jwo9kh/meganex_8k_review/
I saw how the review was one month old and hopefully, the guy who posted it has found this since he made that review
Yeah, saw that opinion on Reddit too, before I decided to buy it. Bought it second hand though. Before that, I watched the reviews, read the discord channel and came to the conclusion that a lot had changed in the last weeks. And even though, like I wrote, a lot of tinkering to get it right. Had the same initial reaction than the redditor with my out of the box experience. I wasnāt happy at all with what I was seeing. But it was the same coming from the Reverb G2 to the Pimax Crystal. It was an awfull experience at first. But after some fiddeling reading up on the Pimax software and how to set it up I never turned on the G2 again.
I am very gladly in a position where the price tag didnāt matter, because I had a lot of tech I didnāt use lying around to sell, so that the upgrade cost came down to like 200ā¬. Anyone thinking to buy this HMD should consider the cost, because it is an expensive peace of tech without a proper return policy and unknown support history, at least in europe. I donāt know how good they are on guarantee and stuff like this. I wouldnāt recommend buying this to anyone who would be in real problems loosing the money spend on this HMD.
Great post and concurs with my experience, having used the MeganeX for over a month.
My startup is very smooth now, since I plugged my HDMI TV into display port 1 (with an adapter) and MeganeX into display port 2.
I also wait for Windows to start before plugging power into the link box.
