Today I had an MMMX to MHTG flight for the second time on a stock A320neo. The first time I tried a RNAV to rwy 02, today I tried an auto IFR approach. Neither time was I vectored in a way that would allow me to have a touchdown on rwy 02 whatsoever. Therefore I had to land in a full manual VFR fashion both times.
I am aware that this is an extremely difficult airport. What is your IFR experience with this airport?
The MHTG RNP RWY 02 approach is a RNP approach, not a RNAV GPS approach. RNP approaches according to the approach chart require special equipment and crew authorization. The RNP RWY 2 approach has waypoints on a curved course to the airport due to the terrain. The AP flies the approach at the correct airspeed and turning radius for each aircraft. AFAIK MSFS does not have the necessary information built into each FMS for RNP approaches.
It is possible for aircraft to fly RNP approaches using GPS only. Larger aircraft might fly too fast to stay on course. Smaller, slower GA aircraft should be able to fly these approaches correctly although GA aircraft are prohibited from these types of approaches because their climb performance is not sufficient to fly the missed approach.
There is not an ILS approach to MHTG. There is a VOR RWY 02 approach that can be used.
It is a very challenging airport!
Have you seen this old vid of this 737 that was perhaps a bit high on the speed and floated halfway down the runway. It remains one of the most nail biting vids out there. Those brakes must have been on fire.
