Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 General Feedback

I have some issues with the lights, either they are almost invisible or when flying at night, some of them has to much contrast.

Lucky you. I just flew a 1h 30m flight that ended because suddenly my flaps would not deploy, then my flight controls would not work.

Even Free Flight bugs out, I’m officially done with this game.

The bloom effect at night surely is a bit overdone in FS2024.
But your pictures show 2 different issues: in the first, the brightness of the GPS displays must be tuned down (should be a menu command in the GPS) - so you can do something.
In the second and third, procedural lighting (the normal autogenerated buildings) and lighting of a photogrammetry bridge are mixed. Maybe the material of the PG bridge has a too high albedo defined, or the lighting is baked in? Either way, you can’t do anything about it.

agree.

I’m sure a lot of load could be taken from the servers if aircraft and User Interface weren’t streamed and the previous World Updates were optional at own descretion.

The problem is that the simpler solution to resolve the streaming issue is to reduce the quality… I hope that’s not what they decide to do, the sim looks beautifully when only few people are online.

I have been trying again and again to get a reasonable flight in on MS2024 and finally managed today with a few glitches. I have to say though, that the graphics are NOT better than 2020 on the whole. I had one dusk departure from Edinburgh a few days ago , where the sky and the light was awesome and very realistic. I carried out another flight today and the clouds looked like cotton wool, there one minute, gone the next, oh, back again, oh gone again.

The Terminal buildings at Edinburgh and Southampton were blocky and looked like something out of Minecraft. An Beech 200 spawned in front of me on the taxiway and over the course of the next minute, went from course blocks to some level of detail. Other aircraft appearing and disappearing.

I am on XBox, I have adjusted the cache settings and have 800/800mbps up and down with ethernet connection. The issue is clearly at the server end I think.

Just a point on the ATC…It is pretty bad but don’t knock Asobo for the phraseology used. I have been an ATCO for 32 years qualified in many different disciplines. As previously mentioned, the phraseology of Tree, Niner etc is standard ICAO phraseology. In the normal course of events, you would not use such emphasis, unless radio reception was poor or the recipient did not have English as a first language. You are far more likely to come across non native English speakers in Europe, than in the USA (outside of International Airports) which is why it is used much more by those East of 30W in the normal course of events.
It is a Standard and Recommended Practice written in ICAO Annex 10 (Aeronautical Communications) in Chapter 5 with the note:
Speech transmitting technique should be such that the highest possible intelligibility is incorporated in each transmission. Fulfilment of this aim requires that air crew and ground personnel should:
a) enunciate each word clearly and distinctly

It sounds awkward on the Sim, because it is a computer generated speaker, whereas a normal human can enunciate such words without them sounding odd. Voice comms are slowly dying anyway as more and more aircraft are fitted with CPDLC (Controller Pilot Data Link)

Dont get me started on QNH 102100 or FL instead of Flight Level etc etc.

So I decided to embrace MSFS 2024, unfixed Xbox mouse freelook and all. Here is what I recall – making notes would have led to much more.

  • My freelook workaround is Frankensteinian – left hand runs controller thumb stick to freelook. Right hand runs mouse to de/activate freelook and manipulate aircraft. Please fix this!
  • You can tell its streamed – it performs better in the morning. My ISP pinky promises 1Gb in a growing town. You know when the neighborhood and the fam fires up Netflix/YouTube. Local caching will help this greatly.
  • Abandoned idea of a patch/utility to copy 2020 bindings to 2024. Did it myself over hours and days. No fun was had.
  • 2024 has a sneaky tendency to sometimes not show bindings and I occasionally had to quit and restart to seem them
  • This happens in flight too. I bound increment/decrement spoilers to keys and the 787 sporadically did not respond to keypresses in one approach
  • Had the 737 on final somewhere. Took manual control to land and after a massive stutter, it became totally unresponsive to keyboard inputs.
  • 737 max MKJS to KJFK CTD after missing descent point I made a dive for it. Had just gotten approach settled (ish) then 2024 froze solid. Quit to desktop – restart 2024.
  • On another solid freeze – tab key still toggled EFB…
  • The 787 accepted a Simbrief plan and I clicked to get it from avionics in EFB. En route ATC window showed I could request IFR so I did and it guided me to destination – interesting…
  • Longitude into KTEX. Hot and high before approach. Continued 180 degrees off approach course, got things settled and back on course. Just after re-acquiring GPS course, the sim gave a massive stutter then CTD.
  • Does 2024 have difficulty with out of ordinary parameters when there is a lot going on? It used to happen with 2020 too.
  • Increased rolling cache to 128Gb on Xbox series X internal drive. Seems to work well, but complex aircraft (737, a320v2) in/out of major airports is a stutter fest.
  • Well documented elsewhere – the Airbuses invariably freeze the sim when you try to get back to the main or fly now menu.
  • King Air is still underdeveloped. No VNAV. CTD on bad final – no deets – sorry. This plane is woefully in need of some love
  • Is the KAP140, Garmin 530/430 in the Twin Otter working right? I’m too inexperienced with these avionics and tried too many things to recount, but it seemed more polished in 2020?
  • The Garmin 530/430 is way too bright at night.
  • The audio and video does not like doing back to back flights. Heavy flicker and crackle at sunset on second consecutive flight

The online flight planner needs fixes and explanations

  • Tooltips on the buttons would be nice, especially when using collapsed buttons on small screens
  • Auto routing system needs polish – IFR flights should not overfly the airport before approach.
  • Planner routing – a Twin Otter flight north from YBCG – YBBN included a westerly waypoint that doubled the trip length. The northern leg included a zig zag of several miles. I deleted this but could not delete the westerly leg in the planner. Deleted it in the 530/430 and flew north…
  • ATC didn’t recognise when I got to the next waypoint and even until final approach it was still directing me to the bypassed western waypoint.
  • The aircraft equipment section under Flight Details needs more explanation or automation for non pilots. Or (does it?) pick up the right settings from plane selection
  • It would be nice to set defaults for registration, airline and especially call sign
  • Under Fuel and Payload, the average fuel burn field is often 0 even with a plane selected. Then - all the consumption rates in the game are in L/h (see more below)
  • The weights and payload are not imported into the aircraft / EFB so they come off as irrelevant. More anon

EFB

  • Has two places for fuel and weight – aircraft panel and flight planner panel. Add online planner this makes 3 places to consider fuel, passengers and cargo. I think the EFB ā€œload in aircraftā€ button works (?), but that trio of passengers, cargo and fuel in 3 places is cumbersome to manipulate. Confusing – and if there is a flow and logic – its not intuitive. It might work for trained pilots, but some of us are not.
  • None of the search boxes work on Xbox. Type in an ICAO airport and nothing comes up. Click on the x to delete it and the on-screen keyboard returns and the airport shows below the box, like a drop down menu. Cancel the keyboard and its gone.
  • Does 2024 EFB need its own keyboard like Inibuilds EFBs?
  • This forces use of the online flight planner to research approaches etc. Mildly annoying for me as I already have an old Surface 3 tablet dedicated as a Simbrief/metar/etc screen, but with 2024 wanted to do more in sim.
  • The EFB’s 2 fuel panels and the planner use inconsistent fuel measures and the in game plane fuel use stats are in metric (after I specified US units in settings) – so I had to write down a conversion formula from Litres to Gallons to pounds. Not fun. Abandoned it as tedious. Is it picking up metric from the console’s Canada localisation?

Simbrief – Unobtainium for Xbox simmers?

  • Please implement proper Simbrief integration into 2024 at the EFB and aircraft levels. It could allow the Inibuilds fleet (others?) to get their flight plans into ATC instead of flying IFR as VFR.
  • Or at the very least make get flight plan from avionics work properly.
  • It would also be nice to get Jeppeson chart coverage where the LIDO charts aren’t.
  • Charts in avionics like on PC would be nice…
  • We’ve heard the Marketplace doesn’t work for free products and heard for years that the Xbox platform is locked down tight – but we’ve also seen free airplanes (cars, skins, weapons, expansions in other games), WASM and other software and PMDG 777 ER links to PMDG servers for metar. It can be done.

Power management on Xbox would be nice – specifically to override system idle power saving settings in flight. Long flights mean leaving Xbox set to stay on forever, even if its on the dashboard. However much that is, it shows up in the light bill.

As a workaround, you can click on the airport in the map view and a menu will pop up allowing you to designate it as the Arrival or Departure. Do this and then it will be populated on the flight planning screen.

Hello! New to this forum, and new to MSFS2024. I am a very, very beginner, so here is what I need: can anyone recommend a true super-easy beginner’s guide to help me start my very first flight? Everything seems soooooo complicated! I can’t take off. Where do I start? my PC’s keyboard? Should I buy a joystick? HELP!!!

defo had a lot less CTDs when avoiding big busy airports, even with traffic and multiplayer off, even going into the area = CTDs sometimes for me, best flights I’ve had are from 1-2 below the most popular airports so it must be load/streaming one of many issues.

Difficult to fly with just a keyboard and mouse. Probably best to start with a wireless controller such as the Xbox gamepad. This will at least allow some control over flights and can be wirelessly attached to PC through Bluetooth.

If you are serious about flying than you should buy a joystick. My good old Thrustmaster flight stick has a twist grip, so you can separately steer the rudder (and nosewheel), and of course a throttle slider.
For realistic helicopter flying some rudder pedals can be good, but I would wait buing these until you are sure you need them.
First and mandatory in FS2024 will be properly setting up your controller axes and key commands. There are default assignments, but at least you should look for multiple commands on the same key - they can give bad surprises.

I know how you feel, mate. I once tried to fly with mouse and keyboard, which is super difficult. The moment you fly with anything resembling a joystick and throttle, you’ll think ā€œIt’s this easy?ā€. It makes that much of a difference. Try to see if you can find a secondhand joystick and if you can a throttle. Nothing super fancy, but it will giving you an indication of what you want out of these peripherals and the game. A joystick with a small throttle unit at the footvis already nice, but if you can shelve out for a second hand T16000 Hotas, that would be nice. But that might be a few steps ahead.

Stepping Away From The Sim

As much as I respect Asobo and the MS Team for trying something hard I am taking a break until the game is fixed a little more. I have spent the entirety of my experience getting around bugs and trying to make it work but the game decided for me when my VIP missions dissapeared after the New Year. I now can’t play and I am stuck paying maintenance costs. I hope you guys figure it out because I really want to play this sim. Goodbye for now.

I am very disappointd with 2024 and i had such high hopes. MSFS is a broken unfinished WIP sold at a high price with a bait and switch roll out… The colors in 2024 have a washed out water color painting look. Too bad they just dint update 2020 with skinny trees and call it a day. When i want frustration and disappointment i fly 2024 hoping i can get threw a flight without a crash to desk top. When i want to fly i use 2020. Sad, very sad to say that.

How about you open them now?

The game is absolutely trash and the Devs are nowhere to be found.

What a disgrace.

This aged well.

Found today if you mouse pointer in atc or map box controls lock until pointer out of box.

Every time MSFS 2024 updates, it erases all my control settings. Is this a common problem? If so, will there be a fix?

Well well well, the best way seems to begin with the ā€œcareer modeā€, at the very beginning… you will learn to fly before take off, like in the real life…
And use a joystick ; maybe with a steering mode, but not essential at the beginning, if you set properly the helping mode.

A 717 for a Famous Flyer so we can recreate all the routes.
