Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 General Feedback

I have decided (forced) to be realistic about which aspects of the game are viable. I restrict myself to free-flight (no take-off or landings at airports), as doing anything else throws me into contact with an unacceptable number of bugs.

I accept that this makes it very limited in terms of challenge and a fair bit boring, limiting how long you are going to play the game each time. I have favoured sea planes, as aquatic take-offs and landings appear (so far) without issue. This has allowed me to avoid too many bugs of late and I have only experienced one CTD since following this bug-imposed restriction.

I noticed the same thing with the icing, flying the Kodiak here in Virginia.
I had to fidget considerably with the various aircraft switches and knobs to get it to de-ice. Can’t remember for sure, but I think one of the temp controls had to be set in the opposite direction to what seemed correct for it to finally work on the windshield.

Chalk this up to the realism that Jorg and the devs are shooting for. Just this morning I got in a quick flight (northern NY) to shoot an ILS at a local airport and forgot to turn on the all the heating switches. I was too far down the runway before I noticed the airspeed wasn’t alive and I committed to the takeoff. The pitot tube was frozen. Then the windscreen frosted over! I quickly flipped the switches on. I was flying by the sound of the engine in a slow climb so I hopefully wouldn’t stall or fly into the ground. It took about 5 minutes for the pitot tube to thaw out and my airspeed came back. Then the windscreen thawed out shortly afterward. Gotta love the updated realism in that regard thanks to my blunder!

Actually, Carenado started out good, but went downhill. Look at their early work with the PA44 and Seneca V. Very nice work. Something changed their attitude toward MSFS. Now they make half baked goods.

I don’t think something so fundamental for a supposedly serious flight simulator is worth singling out as being praiseworthy.

I flew through a yellow area on the weather radar in icing conditions in the A330 the other day on approach into Leipzig. What a mistake that was. Hmm … why is my airspeed stuck at 240kts … I should be slowing down in this configuration … oh #### my pitot tubes have frozen up! What followed was the most stressed I have ever been flying on a flight sim. Managed to survive and divert to Berlin where my airspeed came back after a while out of the clouds/snow. Was very impressed once I’d had time to collect my thoughts

I think it’s the difference between putting out a product under your own name vs being a contractor for another company…

Hmm, just not a fan of any aspect of 2024, huh? I have faith in it.

Only flown airliners in 2024 in icing conditions but it’s very restricted to the nose, and leading edges

The lack of any airliner training beyond the takeoff and landing in the MAX-8 is really bad. Got all of these wonderful inibuilds Airbus variants that nobody new to airliner flying knows how to fly and the only way to find out is knowing to look up A330 driver on youtube

Yes, the commissioned pieces say Microsoft / Carenado, and these don’t get updated unless MS pays. “Carenado only” ones should update. That seemed to stop around May 2023.

That’s exactly where I’m learning some of the nuances of the Airbus variants (youtube). Thankfully there are people out there who are investing the time on youtube to go through some procedures in the large aircraft. I shied away from the Max-8 so far.

That’s why I fly MSFS; for the moments like that, and the feeling of accomplishment when completing a flight, pretty much by the book.

What are you talking about? How does this mean they’re not a fan of 2024?

It’s icing. MSFS 2020 has it, X-Plane has it, P3D and FSX have it. It’s hardly a noteworthy achievement for a flight game made in 2024.

Eventually I will have to give up on this sim if it doesn’t improve by leaps and bounds quickly… I’ve never had a single frame of gameplay that didn’t look wrong or was glitched… and that’s just talking about flying the aircraft’s… my aircraft falling out of the sky crashing on start … forklifts and trucks and people going up and down through the ground into the air like it’s a funny cartoon… so much on screen loading I don’t think I’ve ever felt “immersed”… random system crashes every day…right now everones talking about getting career mode working and free flight isn’t even working yet and that’s setting aside atc problems entirely… I don’t know how this sim made it through any kind of quality control or even the most basic of product testing… it’s just broken and it’s hard to see it getting to point where it’s not broken inside of a year…the graphics may be better yes… but when everything renders as pyramids and blocks then it doesn’t matter… I’ve never flown anything bigger than the pilatus that’s in career mode without serious problems with frame rate and graphics not rendering which turns the cockpit into a flat world with no buttons… I could go on endlessly… they took everyone’s money without any consideration if the product was ready or even sustainable… people who paid money should get some kind of refund… and I’ve never ever ever thought I would say that about a game ever…I’ve been playing 2024 since its release so maybe if I play 2020 for a while I’ll know what it’s like when something works again and my stamina to play 2024 will increase again… sorry for being soooo negative… but I’ve tried… I’ve really really tried to wait and work through the initial problems we all knew were coming but this is too much… sorry if I’m being really dramatic lol

Well thank goodness you have You tube to fall back on, knowing to turn on the pitot heat is not just for the the big jets it’s flight school 101, just think what it was like back in the day before all these you tube “experts” were about, you actually had to read stuff then

On Airbus aircraft, pitot tube heat is automatic so they much just have been overwhelmed by the sheer amount of ice in the yellow area. Engine and wing anti-ice were on and doing just fine

it still looks wrong

OK thanks for telling us and do not slam the door too hard while you’re leaving…

No seriously… I think many of us experience what you do only to different extents.

Let’s give it some time to improve. The 2020 version did mature well with time.

I want to be optimistic.
