Microsoft Flight Simulator - Los Angeles - Real Vs In-Game

I think this is the right place to post this: https://imgur.com/gallery/Z5s0AMz

Here are 49 images from various buildings around LA compared to real life.

(The real images are from Wikipedia).

Not sure what the point of the comparison is. There are limits to photogrammetry after all. Since this is a flight simulator, I think it would be a better comparison to show those scenes from 2000+ feet up.

Definitely very telling that many buildings are still under construction. They have a significant issue with their photogrammetry in that it looks incredibly awful. The buildings look like they are made of clay. It’s terrible. I’d rather have fake not anywhere close to reality buildings than the current mess.

then switch off the photogrammetry.

Wow, I hope they gave you a free upgrade for doing all this work!

Yeah the photogammetry needs a LOT of work. I love low and slow flying over big cities, but not in the apocalyptic world of MSFS

photogrammetry rocks, that’s what I was wishing for the sim developers to mount to the flight simulator for quite a long time now. it’s at least pleasant to see they have somehow started to implement it.

Actually I am quite impressed on how close the images are to the real buildings, despite the “under construction” anomalies. I say this, in the knowledge that, all this comes down to data. Complex data which was captured using scanning devices, whether it be via satellite, camera, or hand-edited. The resultant scenery, as we ultimately see it rendered, is the result of data quality being manipulated all along the way from start to end. Who knows what may have caused some data to be clobbered which would explain the missing structures, particularly the complex or unusual ones, e,g. Watts Towers?

This sure beats the boxy rectangles of other sims or past versions of FSX itself.

Bravo to the development team for trying to do the impossible (recreate the world in digital form).

As we heard on day one, “The world is big. The world is really big.”

mate…its a FLYING sim…not a ‘sidewalk city and street’ simulator…

the view from up here looks fab!
